The judge was simply following the sentencing guidelines set out by the Sentencing Council, the independent body of which Starmer was a founding member (as DPP, appointed 2010 and serving until 2013). If the sentences are wrong, the problem starts with the guidelines he helped shape, not an independent judge doing their job.
