If 200 is the height of the pole - the dog, and 300 is the height of the poll + the dog, then 100 is actually the height of 2 dogs on top of each other. Think of it like this, if 200 is height of pole - dog, and you add a dog, then you get the height of the poll. If 300 is the height of the pole + a dog, then that means 200 + 1x = height of the poll. 200 +2x = 300 ergo, 2x = 100 ergo, x = 50.
