@GrykUnplugged

Retired from day job @wesleygrykllp, worried about where this absurd world is headed & think we should all do our own little bit to change that. Views my own.

But, not to worry, in the 21st century traditional female dancers are back in force too in Sharm el Sheikh. 🧵/3

‘Khawal’, now a derogatory Arabic term for a gay man, derives from the cross dressing male dancers who in the late 18th & 19th century replaced banned female dancers at Egyptian wedding & festivals. An art form rather beautifully resurrected for Sharm el Sheikh tourists. 🧵/1

Today, 9 months before Christmas, Christians celebrate the Annunciation when the Angel Gabriel announced to Mary that she was with child. My favourite rendition is this 15th cent. Dutch version showing a homuncular baby Jesus flying in the angel’s wake, cross already in hand!

The Annunciation from Dutch perspective in 15th century work @TheCloisters. Joseph toils in workshop, traps set against mice & evil spirits entering while Gabriel tries to alert an oblivious Mary to imminent arrival of foetal Christ depicted making aerial descent through window.

@duolingo Your new format with the adverts at every turn which are difficult to get rid of are a disaster. People will begin to leave if you do not alter it!

Erratum: Whoops, the Brooklyn Bridge is only 143 years old. Old Walt Whitman was “Crossing Brooklyn Ferry” 170 years ago!

Art as antidote to the anxiety of our doomscrolling era: #edwardnorton’s moving declamation last night on #thelateshow of #waltwhitman’s message of measured optimism to successive generations in “Crossing Brooklyn Bridge” penned 170 years ago. “Nor is it yours alone to see evil.”

Edward Norton on Wednesday night granted 'Late Show' host Stephen Colbert's wish, with a powerful reading of Walt Whitman's "Crossing Brooklyn Ferry." dlvr.it/TRZTyg

Remember when Trump sued ABC, Meta, X, and Paramount, and they all agreed to settle for millions of dollars? Well, that money was supposed to go to Trump’s future presidential library fund—except that fund has been dissolved with no public accounting of where the money went. If these payments were labeled “charitable contributions,” the corporations could even write them off on their taxes. That’s why @SenWarren, @SenBlumenthal, and I are demanding answers!

By doing this, Nawrocki is undermining Poland’s defense. It’s a typical far-right anti-EU stance that ultimately plays into the hands of Europe’s adversaries, particularly Russia

What is the point of saying we “stand with the women of Afghanistan” while banning them from getting study visa's to the UK? Even students who won the @CheveningFCDO, one of the most competitive scholarships in the world. And now @ShabanaMahmood says no, all cancelled.
UK at the UN 🇬🇧🇺🇳@UKUN_NewYork

As CSW begins, the UK stands with the women and girls of Afghanistan. We are appalled by the intensification of the Taliban’s repression, including a new penal code which legitimises domestic violence. These horrific decrees must be reversed. @Jacqui_Smith1 at the UNSC.

The Orange One as supplicant in his call to Putin, willing to dilute sanctions on Russia to reduce impact of his Middle East adventurism on world oil markets and economy.

From today’s Russian papers: Donald Trump “needs help extricating himself from the poisoned political web spun from his arrogance & recklessness. Putin’s political trump cards have multiplied due to the miscalculations of his US counterpart” #ReadingRussia

US/Israel once again attacked the historic city of Isfahan damaging heritage sites like the breathtaking Chehel Sotoun Palace. No one in IDF or US military to sound the alarm on what a hard sell it is to claim you care about the Iranian people while destroying their cultural symbols?

War-El-Largo! Cartoonist #BarryBlitt’s @NewYorker cover portrays clownish Orange One in latest guise, as general heading to war in the Middle East w/his wee sidekick @PeteHegseth. This all comes after years of promising his voters “America First!” & “no more Forever Wars.”
