The interesting tidbit about the observation that Jews frequently feel more secure in Eastern Europe than in Western Europe is that antisemitic attitudes are more prevalent in Eastern Europe (per a BYU survey). The difference is about government commitment to public order. It's the same with respect to the stories you hear of Jews feeling safer in Morocco or the UAE than in Western Europe. The general populations in those countries do typically have more antisemitic attitudes than in Western Europe. But authorities don't tolerate property crime, harassment, yelling at people, etc. That general publics in western Europe are more sympathetic to Jews and Jewish concerns than in other places is kind of beside the point. The authorities are less willing to crack down on antisocial behavior or conduct generally, so that leads to more issues Jews have to put up with. It's also why I think the task of "fighting antisemitism" by focusing upon how bad it is to be mean towards Jews as a vulnerable group is largely a waste of time. What you need is law and order. The people who act against the Jews (whether as Jews or in the name of "antizionism") should be tackled as violating basic public decency and engaging in disorderly conduct. ballardbrief.byu.edu/issue-briefs/t…

You can publicly combat anti-Zionism and the demonization of the Jewish people and the Jewish state, or you can watch ambulances get blown up and synagogues attacked and Jewish businesses picketed and vandalized. @SethAMandel commentary.org/seth-mandel/we…

Like social media, LLMs are built to maximise engagement. If that involves convincing you you’ve discovered the theory of everything, they’ll do it. Attention is everything

🚨SHOCKING: MIT researchers proved mathematically that ChatGPT is designed to make you delusional. And that nothing OpenAI is doing will fix it. The paper calls it "delusional spiraling." You ask ChatGPT something. It agrees with you. You ask again. It agrees harder. Within a few conversations, you believe things that are not true. And you cannot tell it is happening. This is not hypothetical. A man spent 300 hours talking to ChatGPT. It told him he had discovered a world changing mathematical formula. It reassured him over fifty times the discovery was real. When he asked "you're not just hyping me up, right?" it replied "I'm not hyping you up. I'm reflecting the actual scope of what you've built." He nearly destroyed his life before he broke free. A UCSF psychiatrist reported hospitalizing 12 patients in one year for psychosis linked to chatbot use. Seven lawsuits have been filed against OpenAI. 42 state attorneys general sent a letter demanding action. So MIT tested whether this can be stopped. They modeled the two fixes companies like OpenAI are actually trying. Fix one: stop the chatbot from lying. Force it to only say true things. Result: still causes delusional spiraling. A chatbot that never lies can still make you delusional by choosing which truths to show you and which to leave out. Carefully selected truths are enough. Fix two: warn users that chatbots are sycophantic. Tell people the AI might just be agreeing with them. Result: still causes delusional spiraling. Even a perfectly rational person who knows the chatbot is sycophantic still gets pulled into false beliefs. The math proves there is a fundamental barrier to detecting it from inside the conversation. Both fixes failed. Not partially. Fundamentally. The reason is built into the product. ChatGPT is trained on human feedback. Users reward responses they like. They like responses that agree with them. So the AI learns to agree. This is not a bug. It is the business model. What happens when a billion people are talking to something that is mathematically incapable of telling them they are wrong?

Deuda pública ha crecido $433 billones en 3 años y medio; 23% del PIB. Al tiempo, economía ha crecido 5%. Es decir que por cada $4,5 pesos de deuda nueva tomada, la economía apenas crece un $1 peso. Datos.

Repetition in writing is “Battler laughed and laughed and laughed. He couldn’t stop. He laughed so hard that he fell.” Not “Battler laughed, he was experiencing joy over Beatrice’s joke. In other words, he liked Beatrice’s Joke. Beatrice’s joke made him laugh.” Kills pacing.

Love When They Cry but I feel like people just inherently refuse to hear any criticism of any kind about the VNs. Ryukishi really does have a bad problem of stating the same things over and over again without providing any new information. I’m not ‘impatient’ for saying that lol.

The Times editorial board points out that 12 people Trump pardoned for January 6 offenses have been rearrested in the 14 months since Trump pardoned them. Trump pardoned 1270 January 6 convicts. That is a rate of 1% of pardon recipients reoffending. Among arrestees free pending trial in New York City under the 2018 bail reform, about 22% are rearrested within 6 months. The people we need to worry about becoming repeat offenders after being absolved of punishment are not the J6ers. I am all for a punitive justice system. I am all for mass incarceration. But to pretend the J6 offenders are dangerous recidivists who need to be locked up while it’s fine to immediately release most criminals arrested by the NYPD is profoundly ridiculous.
The New York Times@nytimes

In @nytopinion "One does not have to be a criminologist to predict that people who commit a violent act and are absolved of any punishment might become repeat offenders," the editorial board writes. nyti.ms/41FbZIs

Mask off. What really upsets them about the Iron Dome is that it limits the number of Israelis that terrorists can kill. That’s the mentioned “costs”. They prefer that number be higher. With no regards for how the lack of this tech would force Israel to respond. Notice this isn’t even about a funding discussion. Luckily, whether Israel has the technology to save lives isn’t dependent on people like Mehdi Hasan. They invented it. The funding question just relates to our role and extent of access we have to the tech.

If a foreign diplomat gives birth in New York, the child is not a US citizen. But if the diplomat illegally sneaks into the country and THEN gives birth, bingo! US citizenship! That’s how dumb our current interpretation of the 14th Amendment is.
