@pleasedont98231 A few examples the quoted tweet provided really weren't that bad though (now I'm blocked so lol). Like the homeroom one, personally I feel like it's a great way to convey the mistaken meaning of, well, danger? Gold star and right on money I find fine too, last one is wack tho lol

@GumilyMain Yes you should make a proper localization of things to make them more palatable for general audiences. That's not what most people complain about.

@pleasedont98231 To elaborate, if you want your audience to laugh at a linguistic joke, would you rather do a TL note like "the joke is that in Polish joint sounds the same as pond, and crayfish the same as cancer", or just come up with a different, best case similar joke in the target language?

@pleasedont98231 If you're specifically making subtitles for an audience that wants this, sure. But if you're subtitling for the general audience, ESPECIALLY a comedy, then please no. The worst thing you can do to a joke is explain it. And nobody will keep pausing to read all that.

This is one more reason localizers are the worst. It shouldn't matter what they think "fits the setting" best, because it's a Japanese creation & the story is written in Japanese. The honorifics should absolutely be left alone because they're an integral part of showing character relationships through how they address each other & anyone who has the slightest investment in Japanese media can easily understand how they work without being "localized" out based on localizer preference. Not to mention, in Re:Zero specifically, the people of that world are speaking a form of Japanese, which is how Subaru was able to communicate with everyone & more easily learn the written form of the language.

@SethC1995 Fan translators in general are more consistent with just keeping them if that's what they choose, but on a per manga basis, they're actually as likely as official translators to omit honorifics

@SethC1995 I'm writing a thesis comparing fan and official manga translations, and funnily enough, official translations are as likely to omit honorifics as to keep them (literally the same number of times in my corpus). In one case, on one page, kun was equivalented, loaned AND omitted lol

Unironically, 16:10 is the best ratio. Both wide, and also taller than the current 16:9 standard, meaning you fit more space vertically.
It's a shame there's so few 16:10 monitors nowadays, I guess at least my Macbook has that.

Had this conversation with my parents a few days ago and was called insane for it, then proceeded to explain to them the entire “happy medium” reason behind 16:9 and how both productivity and media are screwed over by it.
