There is no peace without development, and no development without science. Let’s recognize science as a vital lever of knowledge, mindsets and skills.

A grandmother’s tears of loss. And her granddaughter’s smile at memories of life before war. And right now, ever more fear as 11 buildings in Beirut neighbourhoods told to evacuate, and many other areas across #Lebanon continue to be bombed. End the pain. Ceasefire.

Climate change displaces people. And displaced people are among those hit the hardest by climate change — from food shortages to floods to tensions around scarce resources. World leaders now gathering at #COP29 owe it also to these impacted communities to take urgent action.

The Iraqi Parliament’s proposal to lower the legal marriage age for girls from 18 to 9 years old is an assault on childhood. Girls are not spouses—they are children who deserve their right to grow up with protection and dignity.

Full solidarity with @UNRWA and its brave teams whose work is essential to millions of Palestinians. This decision is dangerous and outrageous. There is no alternative to UNRWA.
Philippe Lazzarini@UNLazzarini

The vote by the Israeli Parliament (Knesset) against @UNRWA this evening is unprecedented and sets a dangerous precedent. It opposes the UN Charter and violates the State of Israel’s obligations under international law.  This is the latest in the ongoing campaign to discredit UNRWA and delegitimize its role towards providing human-development assistance and services to #Palestine Refugees. These bills will only deepen the suffering of Palestinians, especially in #Gaza where people have been going through more than a year of sheer hell. It will deprive over 650,000 girls & boys there from education, putting at risk an entire generation of children. These bills increase the suffering of the Palestinians & are nothing less than collective punishment. Putting an end to UNRWA & its services will not strip the Palestinians from their refugee status. That status is protected by another UN General Assembly resolution until a fair and lasting solution is found to the plight of the Palestinians. Failing to push back these bills will weaken our common multilateral mechanism established after World War 2. This should be a concern to all.

.@UNRWA is indispensable in providing lifesaving aid and social services in Gaza. If implemented, this decision will have devastating consequences on food security and much more for the most vulnerable people.
António Guterres@antonioguterres

If implemented, the laws adopted today by the Knesset of Israel would likely prevent @UNRWA from continuing its essential work in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, with devastating consequences for Palestine refugees. I call on Israel to act consistently with its obligations under the Charter of the @UN & international law. National legislation cannot alter those obligations. I am bringing this matter to the attention of the UN General Assembly, and will keep the Assembly closely informed as the situation develops. There is no alternative to UNRWA.

I join @antonioguterres in calling for @UNRWA’s work in the occupied Palestinian territory to continue. Otherwise millions of Palestinians will be deprived of vital support — including education and health services — which only UNRWA has the mandate and capacity to deliver.

I echo the @UN SG @antonioguterres: @UNRWA is a vital lifeline in these desperate times. Israel's two new laws, if implemented, could have devastating consequences for millions of Palestinian refugees. The principles of the UN Charter and int'l humanitarian law must prevail.

The peace to wish for in the #NewYear must be just: peace with political, economic, social rights for all; peace with statehood and citizenship for those who’ve had them denied; peace with the end of exile for those who lost their homes. In 2024, may we hope again for real peace.
