@PaulSkallas I do wonder if there's a similar thing happening with cinema and that's why the average person thinks "Movies ain't what they used to be". They aren't appealing to the average moviegoer because the middle has fallen out. Has to be a huge franchise or appeal to Letterboxd users

"readers" don't really exist anymore. Reading books is a niche hobby like flying a kite or bird watching. So it attracts a certain type of person If you want a normal person to read your stuff you're going to have to get their attention while they are at work and bored

@AdamSinger dance music is very lucky that labels themselves act as the recommendations considering they're usually tailored towards a specific niche even in a specific genre. Armin's Whos Afraid of 138 label is uplifting trance only, as an example

I just don't think music algos/AI can do recommendations. Spotify surfaces nostalgic tunes but nothing new. I've spent well >$10K on Beatport over a decade and still make 0 purchases from recs section (finds labels I like but can't pick winning tracks). Clearly a human task to me

@Fink_Money So fucking crazy how our little hour conversation a few months back (Hamish) probably had more intellect about investing than all these morons with their "agents". Kioxia, Ryukyus and Caterpillar have been huge for me and it was just...buy trendy winners?

@Merridew__ My (unpopular here) view is that these people probably have money or whatever but due to social defects aren't getting any form of status with it, so become bitter social media posters. Most successful guy I ever knew with women was a 5'6 brokeass who was just energetic + funny

@jnconkle Been bearish for about a month now outside of a couple (Konami, Capcom) and even then I'm not entirely bullish. AI, China, and the pretty negative State of Gaming 2026 report are my reasons. Give this a quick glance when you have time matthewball.co/all/presentati…

@PaulSkallas Yep. Having a potential base to potentially hit the jackpot is the window. It's why if you're trading options you better have a living first (side note: would be interesting to research how as concerts have changed in purpose, how tours in terms of length and venues change)

@HDP1995 Well you could make a living. Not have to get a job. Which is huge in art Then you had the potential for riches. Not likely. But the potential was there. That's the window

Golden ages of art occur when a field briefly offers outsized rewards (money, status, or freedom) this creates a window that pulls high-ability people into it, but only temporarily Talent follows incentives when rewards fade, the talent pool drains lindynewsletter.beehiiv.com/p/talent-follo…

@PaulSkallas The incentives and gatekeepers plus industry also meant those in "Niche" genres could generate outsized returns. Prog Rock post-80s almost impossible to succeed in. Dream Theater lucky one of their songs rotated on MTV and made a career and wealth off just that

Father is looking for some interesting South American diversification. Is it just the usual raw materials/banks play or anything else looking hot down there right now?

10yrs ago, having Tweetdeck (and FinTwit) open was a genuine edge. Now, it’s increasingly becoming a net negative. The ‘spouting utter bollocks’ market is ‘bid over, your size’

@PaulSkallas (salaries are monthly btw). Happened in 12-24 months. Those who'd already been playing for ages suddenly found themselves with more money for their passion than most Europeans themselves earn at the jobs

@PaulSkallas esports boom/bubble very small example. Was semi-involved in Counter-Strike scene way back in late 2000s/early 2010s. Barely any salary. TwitchTV becomes a thing. Boom happens, salaries go from 500-1k euros for top teams in 2014 to approaching 10k in 2016. Lots of rich pros

Btw, what's happening now is how Islam dominated the world. Persians and the Romans fought each other to exhaustion. Arabs sat back and waited. Then they just invaded the lands and took over.

@thefinnmckenty Miss those games. $20 for something that wasn't indie but clearly lacked polish. A solid 4-6/10 where at least the gameplay was slightly compelling

@MrMBrown Race at the weekend was weird. More about battery management than planning actual overtakes. Not sure if I like it or not yet but it was still rather unique Aston are fucked imo for the first few races. Data gathering for the engine
