"Toyota's hybrid batteries never break down." "Don't listen to EV Clinic, they find fault with everything." "Batteries last over 500,000 km in all Toyotas." "The warranty is 10 years" (they forget to mention 180k km). "They are some amateurs." The owners didnt learned to hear information as it is, raw and accurate. Besides repairing them, we regularly communicate off-the-record with authorized service technicians. And we have read all sorts of deceptions and false advertisements in Toyota groups, so we will go through all inboxes from the last 5 years for inquiries we've had. We have already been clear, of all hybrids, Toyota is the lesser evil and a better choice than diesel, but not better than EV (not every one), because it uses outdated NiMH cell technology in a very poorly designed battery system that fails due to overheating in the middle section. They could have solved it better by cooling it with an air conditioning chiller like in the Outlander, BMS monitors every 5-6 cells but does not balance the middle ones, there are only 2-3 temperature sensors and no redundant protection system if there is no airflow for cooling. Some cells cook at 80,000 km, others at 180,000 km. Some who regularly disassemble, repair, and replace weaker cells boast of an original battery at 750,000 km, but it has been repaired 5 times because the battery cover is original, so it supposedly qualifies as "still original battery." Toyota's salvation is that it sells the battery cheaply, i.e., €2000 for 1kWh, which is 8 times more expensive than for EV and consumes about 7 liters in the city (1kWh for EV is approx. €250). Toyota definitely has the cheapest hybrid battery system in the world. Only the people who drive it don't know that the system degrades very quickly, and the car does not trigger an error, but it is noticeable that savings in the city are less because the cells in the middle section are no longer 6.5Ah capacity but 2Ah or even less. One weak cell is enough for the whole system to work poorly. Some even have a Bluetooth diagnostic connected to the OBD and erase the error while driving and continue driving until it completely stops. We work with 2 large taxi fleets, so the batteries come to us destroyed at 200k-250k, with 8-15 cells, which is more than half of the battery pack. Then we get some battery systems already opened with signatures of 2-3 different mechanics at 400k km. So, it is not clear to us where such fanaticism about Toyota hybrids comes from that the battery is "never a problem" and that it lasts millions and is the best technology ever!? The only great thing is the price of a new battery, if the savings on fuel can at all amortize that cost at least at 200k km. Preventive measures to extend the lifespan of a Toyota battery include using the air conditioning to cool in the footwell in summer so that the battery in the passenger compartment intakes cool air. Another measure is to disassemble the battery every 50,000 km, open it and clean all the "breathing" cooling channels, which can partially extend the lifespan. Because it seems one drive and overheating of the battery is enough to damage it, no matter how many kilometers it has. Conclusion: Their batteries do fail. They are easily repairable. Parts are very accessible. Batteries are cooked already at 150k km. Preventive services are a no-brainer. Toyota has the most sustainable hybrid of all. The battery is poorly designed. The battery has too high a tolerance for failure, does not trigger an error. The cheapest new hybrid battery on the market. *In the picture with the infrared camera, you can see the overheating of one cell on the table under simulated load at lower amperages, one cell away from the temperature sensor without voltage monitoring in discharge went into undervoltage and almost reverse polarity. Overheat cooks all adjacent cells, BMS cannot detect the problem.
