Youth tournaments are often a weekend of wasted development. We spend three days chasing a plastic trophy instead of maximizing the court time for genuine player and coach growth. Here is how to rethink the long weekend tournament. 🧵👇

nbcboston.com/video/multimed… Hard to believe I was front and center for almost all of this..all this at 13 different home gyms and at least 25 practice facilities including a mental hospital which was luxurious compared to practicing outside at the Fens. TY Coach Smith for everything

There is an inverse relationship in youth sports between focusing on winning and developing players. You cannot do both optimally at the same time. The more you prioritize winning, the less resources you have to dedicate towards development. The adult desire to win puts a focus on structure & schemes, wasting valuable (and already limited) practice time that could be better spent in dynamic skill building environments. It breeds early positional specialization which limits well rounded development opportunities for all kids. It forces young kids into a performance mindset that inhibits creativity & risk taking. Long term growth is sacrificed for short term results. Remember, selection bias is what creates the illusion that players on youth ‘elite’ teams are developing at faster rate than they otherwise could be in an environment that prioritizes development.

All this was completely foreign to my Midwest brain mere months ago, but in New England we live near some of the best prep schools in America—if not the world! You’re just 17, have already proven SO much. But now have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Love this for you, son 👊

2025 was an amazing year. THANK YOU to all the college coaches who’ve recruited me and continue to express interest. After consulting with my family and coaches, I’ve decided to take a PG year & join the class of 2027. I look forward to the next steps in the recruiting process!
