Association of Surgeons of Uganda (ASOU)
A highlight of the morning sessions: Assoc. Prof. Frank Asiimwe @RubabindaJr President @TheUMAofficial challenged the Ministry of Health @MinofHealthUG on the critical issue of rural surgical care. In a direct dialogue with Dr. Richard Kabanda , Prof. Asiimwe pushed for stronger engagement with stakeholders like @TheUMAofficial in policy-making. He laid out a 4-point roadmap for surgeon retention in our rural communities: 🔹 Train: Expanding specialized education. 🔹 Promote: Creating clear career pathways. 🔹 Equip: Providing the essential "Tools of the Trade" to get the job done. 🔹 Advocate: Pushing the government to provide social amenities (housing, schools, etc.) that make rural placement sustainable. It’s time to move beyond the city and ensure every Ugandan has access to a specialist. #ASOUCONF2026 #SurgicalEquity #UgandaMedical #RuralHealth #PolicyChange #UMA

Makerere University School of Public Health
This week, Ulrika Hertel, Health and SRHR Specialist at @Sida, is engaging with the Makerere University School of Public Health (MakSPH) as partners advance discussions around the proposed EMBOLDEN initiative. The engagements are unpacking Sida’s feedback on the EMBOLDEN proposal led by Prof. Rhoda Wanyenze and partners, while identifying opportunities to further strengthen the concept. The proposed programme brings together three key components: MIDWIZE, which focuses on improving the quality of care during childbirth; SPICH, aimed at strengthening preventive child health services for children aged 0–5 years; and an adolescent sexual and reproductive health component addressing teenage pregnancy and youth wellbeing. During the visit, Ms. Hertel is meeting with Prof. @RhodaWanyenze, Dr. Denis Kintu, Dr. Phyllis Awor, Dr. Johanna Blomgren, Ms. Rebecca Nuwemastiko, Dr. Phillip Wanduru, and Ms. Brenda Wagaba @BrendaWagaba, and is also holding discussions with Dr. Richard Mugahi, Commissioner for Reproductive and Child Health at the Ministry of Health, Uganda. The engagements include a field visit to China-Uganda Friendship Hospital, Naguru, where the team is interacting with MIDWIZE ambassadors to have first-hand experiences of how the midwife-led quality improvement approach is strengthening respectful maternity care and improving childbirth outcomes. The EMBOLDEN initiative is being explored under the Centre of Excellence for Sustainable Health (@CeshCentre) partnership between @Makerere University and @karolinskainst, with support from Sida.
