@SammyKoppelman As the former city rep tasked with delivering this news & negotiating with communities, TY for calling out racism & classism in the bastion of liberal beliefs. What’s good for NIMBY folks is good for the homeless -affordable & supportive housing, REAL mental health treatment,

my 84 year old auntie called me to ask "who the fine white man was at the DNC because he seems like he could've really been good for America". I choked back my laughter real bad and told her softly, "he was great for America. And Black women loved him". She asked for his name and like clockwork I replied, "Grant. Fitzgerald Grant, I believe". She said, "damn, his name even SOUNDS important" and then she let out a Baptist MMMmmmmMmm. told her somebody tried to kill him once. then I stopped because I could barely breathe at this point and she started damning them to hell intently. and I don't know if she'll ever find out, but I haven't laughed that hard in months after she hung up. I know I'm wrong. But, I did it for US. I did it for the United States of America.

I didn’t say anything I didn’t believe or condone views I found awful. I was forthright in my disagreement. And then I tried to turn that tension into a balm and hoped the balm would become a bulwark of empathy.

My people say Lefu leholo ke litšeho - even in the midst of death we laugh 😂. I’m amused most by your reaction to Mandela’s GBV. We do remember though that the Mandela of the early 1950s was not the Mandela we saw emerging from Victor Verster Prison in 1990. A radical change had happened in him. He had now become more thoughtful, much more willing to embrace such progressive views as gender justice, reproductive rights, abolishment of the death penalty, sexual orientation rights etc. Now he approached those who opposed his views with equanimity and dignity. Now also he managed to subdue his patriarchal worldview which was part of his Thembu traditional upbringing. The Mandela of my childhood was different. He was a known rabble rouser and firebrand who did not hesitate - he and his comrades, including my father who was the president of the ANC Youth League at the time - to close down meetings of opponents. Ironically he was also an Anglophone gentleman with Thembu patriarchal values at the same time. He became a changed man during the years of imprisonment. That doesn’t mean what he did doesn’t count anymore.

Baba Zakes, I can call you that because you called me son. Ok – on reading this, my first reaction was WTF, Mandela slapped Evelyn around? I laughed at myself but it helped me understand all the hate that is being thrown my way, and to hold tightly all the solidarity. Thank you

Int 878, led by @NYCCouncilAyala, eliminates the “90-day rule” that forces individuals and families to live in shelter for at least 3 months before becoming eligible for a City voucher. Why would we force people into extended shelter stays as a precondition to accessing housing?
