@HabibShafaq @AnalyticaCamil1 @notaterrornerd It was this response to the statement “With hindsight, we should probably have just simply never pulled out of Afghanistan.” I was wondering if you thought or experienced this regarding ANSDF and civil society development.

Why are people booing him, he’s right. No, the war in Afghanistan wasn’t unwinnable — we were quite literally actively winning it. ANSDF casualty rates stabilized while their recruitment and sustainment levels were up — the Taliban’s casualty rates were drastically increasing, and even the Taliban correctly concluded that their position was untenable. Afghan civil society was increasingly looking like in a mini, Afghan version of the US; educational prospects were increasing across the board — and the Afghan government’s increasingly active measures to curb corruption were gradually beginning to bear fruit (it was less comically corrupt than South Korea was in the 1950s); and its economy was beginning to be stabilized (security was improving gradually enough for Afghan firms to actually tap into Afghanistan’s myriad natural resources — its economy wouldn’t have had to rely on heroin and pomegranates). Instead of having SOCOM do the thing that it’s already doing in like 70 different countries (which was, again, actively winning the war), we pulled the rug out from under the Afghan government.
