Absolutely!! The Gymkhana club should pay market rent. And it is also time that ministers and high officials occupying huge bungalows in the neighbourhood also pay market rents. Why should taxpayers pay for them?
Avinash Shishoo@laidback1954

Leave the 'national security threat' to the experts . Why should a private club be subsidised ? Will the club exist if it is charged rent at market rates ? Let the club buy land at market rates anywhere and continue to function .

Well argued by @virsanghvi : My view is that if you object to retired government servants having a club of their own, then you must also evict ministers from their bungalows and make them drive around in small cars without these huge convoys. Why should politicians, most of whom have access (should they want it) to vast cash incomes, be allowed to live like kings while retired government servants are turfed out of their clubs? You can’t have one standard for the political class and another for everyone else. theprint.in/opinion/sharp-… via @theprintindia

This is funny because - while culture clash can be real - there are basically no "brothaz and rednecks" style videos of Indian brawls, mob crime, thots on a US street, etc. So, every negative video is just badly dressed tech bros taking the wife shopping.

@TweetinderKaul Elites are free to create their own fancy clubs, keep access exclusive and have fancy facilities. It’s just that it cannot be done on public land. Pool in money, buy land, build and club and do whatever the hell you want to do with it. No one gives a rats ass.

That's such a horrendous description of the place. A lot of people of all sorts access the Gym. I appreciate the Govt wants the land but you don't need to vilify what has been an institution for many of us. Cliques always form. If you open your eyes and look around you'll see them among the ruling dispensation. People who are close to them who have quite clearly moved up many many income levels and social positioning. Naturally happens when the State is the ultimate controller of so many assets.

DELHI GYMKHANA CLUB. THE LAST VESTIGE OF COLONIAL INDIA AND THE REDOUBT OF BABALOG (LUTYENS) PRIVILEGE, NEPOTISM IS NOW GOING TO BE CLAIMED BY THE CENTRE. Centre Moves to Take Back Delhi Gymkhana Club Land, Cites Defence and Public Security Needs In a significant move, the Central Government has ordered the re-entry and resumption of the Delhi Gymkhana Club premises located at 2, Safdarjung Road, New Delhi, stating that the land is required for urgent public and strategic purposes. The order was issued on May 22, 2026, by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs through the Land & Development Office (L&DO). The government stated that the property, spread across 27.3 acres, lies in a highly sensitive and strategic area of the national capital and is now needed for strengthening defence infrastructure, public security arrangements, governance infrastructure, and other public-interest projects. According to the communication, the premises had originally been leased to the Imperial Delhi Gymkhana Club Ltd., now known as Delhi Gymkhana Club Ltd., for the purpose of maintaining a social and sporting club. The Delhi Gymkhana Club is considered one of the oldest and most prestigious clubs in India. The club shifted to its present location in 1913 and was then known as the “Imperial Delhi Gymkhana Club”, with Spencer Harcourt Butler serving as its first President. After India attained Independence in 1947, the word “Imperial” was dropped and the institution came to be known simply as the Delhi Gymkhana Club. The club traces its origins to July 1913. In its early years, the Polo Club functioned as part of the Gymkhana Club before becoming a separate entity in the 1930s after shifting to New Delhi. Historical records relating to the club’s origins are limited, and systematic documentation of its history is understood to have begun only around 1927. Referring to Clause 4 of the lease deed, the Centre noted that the lessor has the authority to re-enter the premises if the land is required for a public purpose. Exercising those powers, the President of India, acting through the L&DO, has determined the lease and ordered immediate re-entry of the property. The order further states that the entire land parcel, along with all buildings, structures, lawns and fittings standing on it, shall vest absolutely with the President of India through the Land & Development Office. The Land & Development Office is scheduled to take over the premises on June 5, 2026. The Delhi Gymkhana Club has been directed to hand over peaceful possession of the property on the said date, failing which possession would be taken in accordance with law. The communication was signed by Deputy Land & Development Officer Suchit Goyal and issued with the approval of the competent authority.

🔈 PM-601-0199 Update: The Department of Homeland Security clarified the immigration policy it announced on Friday, suggesting that current H1B visa holders could be able to “continue on their current path.” semafor.com/article/05/22/… Request: Please do not send me a direct message asking me to explain what a new policy will mean for your application right after it comes out before we know anything about it. This is the latest example of why premature inquiries are not ideal. A policy rolled out on Friday might be completely different come Saturday. I’m now 261 messages behind in telegram (about 8 days), and this latest surge of premature inquiries could put that backlog out longer. In other words, your patience is an essential part of our ability to help you. 🙏 - @curtismorrison

#WATCH | Delhi: Centre asked Delhi Gymkhana Club to hand over premises by June 5, citing public purpose, defence infrastructure and national security considerations. Riya Sachthey, Advocate and Member of Delhi Gymkhana Club, says, "I have been a third-generation member of the Delhi Gymkhana Club. I was pretty appalled when I saw this notice. But when I read through the notice, the legal language clearly states that in the same deed, re-entry is allowed. But re-entry, a layman will not understand what re entry for what? So when you read the lease deed, you will notice that re-entry is only for public use. If this land is to be taken by the government for public use, in public interest, manning the security of our country, if there was some sort of an issue like that, it's okay, I'm fine...The staff over there should be adjusted somewhere so that they don't lose their livelihood. Me being a member, third-generation member, I feel that there should be some sort of an alternate institution which might not be as historical as this. We all can, you know, go there and make it like that. There should be some sort of alternative that we can also go and visit. I'm sure there's something good for the nation, in the interest of the citizens of the country, that such a step is being taken."

@cblatts It is for Americans to decide what they want. Stopping students means the following — 1. All mid level universities dependent on foreign student funding will go bankrupt. 2. You lose top foreign talent, if you can’t provide immigration path, students won’t come. Simple.

My hypothesis: US university education was a massively successful export industry (foreign students paying tuition + housing + living expenses is literally classified as exports) and Trump admin collapsed this demand.

Norwegian journalist Helle Lyng Svends @HelleLyngSvends has become a growing embarrassment for Norway’s citizens and our Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre @jonasgahrstore . What should have been a proud moment for Norway @norwaymfa hosting Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi @PMOIndia @narendramodi for the first time in 43 years, awarding him the country’s highest civilian honor, signing a Green Strategic Partnership with 12 new agreements on clean energy, sustainability, health tech, digital cooperation, and trade was instead hijacked by her personal grandstanding and turned into an international spectacle that makes Norway look rude, entitled, and diplomatically clumsy. This wasn’t a full open press conference. It was a joint statement session with clear protocols. Modi followed standard procedure for such high-level bilateral visits: brief remarks, handshake, and exit. Yet Helle positioned herself as the hero, later tweeting that Modi “would not take my question” while waving the World Press Freedom Index (Norway #1, India #157). She framed it as brave journalism. Most Norwegians see it as embarrassing performative activism that damages our national interests.Norway’s relationship with India matters. We are building real partnerships in the green transition exactly the kind of cooperation Norwegians expect from our government. Billions in potential investments, jobs, technology sharing, and climate goals. Modi’s visit was substantive diplomacy. Instead of highlighting these achievements, the global narrative became “Modi dodges questions in free Norway” thanks to Helle’s viral 16-second clip. This helps no one except her personal brand.Real journalism holds power to account, but there’s a time, place, and manner. Ambushing a foreign head of government during a state visit on Norwegian soil, in front of our own Prime Minister, crosses into disrespect. It signals to the world that Norway cannot host important partners without turning events into awkward confrontations. What message does this send to leaders from Germany, the US, China, or Saudi Arabia? Come to Oslo at your own risk?Helle’s approach reflects poorly on Norwegian citizens who value pragmatism, politeness, and results over viral outrage. Many of us are cringing. We pay taxes for competent foreign policy, not for journalists to chase personal clout at the expense of our Prime Minister’s hard work. Støre stood there politely while our guest was effectively ambushed. This undermines the goodwill built over months of preparation. The World Press Freedom Index she brandished is published by Reporters Without Borders — an NGO with its own biases, selective sourcing, and inconsistencies. India is the world’s largest democracy with a raucous, competitive media landscape. Modi has been elected multiple times by 1.4 billion people. He chooses his communication style Mann Ki Baat, controlled interviews, direct voter outreach and has stuck to it for over a decade. That’s his prerogative as India’s leader. Norway’s press norms do not dictate how foreign elected leaders behave on our soil. By shouting during a joint briefing and then spinning the walk-off as cowardice, Helle ignored the substance: cultural exchanges, economic deals, shared Arctic and Indo-Pacific interests. She made it about “her question.” This self-centered stunt fuels stereotypes of arrogant Europeans lecturing the Global South. India is a rising superpower and vital partner, not some dictatorship to be publicly shamed. Her actions risk harming Norway’s reputation as a serious, respectful actor on the world stage.Norwegians pride ourselves on being practical and solution-oriented. We understand that diplomacy requires tact. Shouting at guests during photo-ops achieves nothing constructive. If Helle has legitimate concerns about press freedom in India, there are better forums: op-eds, interviews with Indian journalists, or private diplomatic channels. Turning a bilateral summit into her personal protest makes Norway look unserious and weakens Støre’s position. This incident highlights a deeper issue with parts of legacy Norwegian media: more activism than balanced reporting. Many citizens already distrust mainstream outlets for prioritizing ideology and clicks over national interests. Helle’s behavior reinforces that skepticism. She is becoming a symbol of why some Norwegians roll their eyes at Dagsavisen commentators more focused on international virtue-signaling than serving Norwegian readers or advancing pragmatic foreign policy. PM Støre deserves better. His government invested time and resources to strengthen ties with India at a time when energy security, green tech, and diversified partnerships are critical. Helle’s grandstanding risks poisoning the atmosphere for future cooperation. Indian officials and citizens noticed. The replies to her post were filled with Indians pointing out the format was never a full Q&A, questioning why a Norwegian journalist feels entitled to hijack their PM’s visit. We should expect more from our journalists. Question leaders yes. But do it professionally, not by turning important state visits into cringe-worthy viral moments that embarrass the host nation. Norway’s citizens want a media that informs, not one that performs. We want a Prime Minister who can deliver results without his events being derailed by ego.Helle Lyng Svends is increasingly becoming an embarrassment not just for herself, but for all of us who value Norway’s reputation as a competent, respectful country. It’s time for reflection in Norwegian media circles: Is this the image we want the world to see? A nation of serious partners or lecturing activists chasing likes? Enough with the stunts. Focus on the deals that actually benefit Norwegians energy, jobs, technology, and a stable world order. Our Prime Minister and our country deserve diplomacy that works, not viral embarrassment.

My family has found her. I tried speaking to her on the call, but since she cannot speak, I spoke with the people who are currently around her. We are trying to help her from our end. As of now, they have only asked for ration so they have something to eat. Since people are offering to help, I want to inform that there’s one issue, she does not have a bank account yet. We are trying to figure out the best possible way to help her further and will update once that is sorted. PS: Since I am not in India at the moment, I will be helping her through my cousin who is reaching there shortly.
