@Alexandra6132 @xenocryptsite As someone who has recently got into Miami Vice, how does that not make the list? It seems to me like the first “modern” television series

@xenocryptsite I saw someone do a tweet listing a bunch of shows that she considers essential viewing. The Prisoner and Columbo were the only shows older than the 90s

@DjsokeSpeaking What about NJ and VA? Much tougher but I don’t think Dems can be picky currently. I don’t see why VA wouldn’t have stood if the election dates had been followed correctly. Probably only nets 2 vs 4

@HainesHoag CO, CA, NY Theoretically IL and you could do PNW seats as well but those are tougher

@ChazNuttycombe Wouldn’t count out NJ. Pre-Callais it would be a tough lift but I wouldn’t rule it out now

Oh and MD they'd also need to gerrymander that in time to be able to be competitive. Most Americans are gonna live in a gerrymandered district by the 2029 election.

Would agree, the US House is probably gonna be a ~Toss-Up this year despite the nat'l environment likely being bluer than 2018. VA-1, NC-1, OH-9, PA-8 are the likely tipping points and they're all Trump +6 or more.
Zachary Donnini@ZacharyDonnini

Boy oh boy. The redistricting war is shaping up to be a major win for Republicans. That means the U.S. House is very much on the table in 2026. Our forecast will update soon to reflect the new landscape, we'll be hard at work today.

@xenocryptsite Right, but to what extent can you generalize Letterboxd ratings/statistics vs just throw them away as a biased subsample of the actual movie-watching population? I’m not sure where that line is

@HainesHoag Well and the intersection is "critical and population evaluation...among people who log things on LetterBoxd".

@xenocryptsite It’s interesting because presumably the split between past hits and what is watched on Letterboxd can be broken down into 1. critical and popular evaluation of films 30 years later (some age well, others terribly) and 2. the age/gender demographics of Letterboxd + viewing habits

"There's Something About Mary" is pretty far down the LetterBoxd list despite being a gargantuan hit. (I think all the time about how "haha Cameron Diaz unknowingly has semen in her hair" was an omnipresent image. Truly another time.)

@MattZeitlin There’s also something slightly uplifting about the fact that Claude is so enamored with Mark Fisher, especially over CCRU buddy and Silicon Valley idol Nick Land

mark fisher was a brilliant man whose work will endure for generations; however, it is also really funny that one of his most widely read essays is a 4,000 word defense of the political intelligence and importance of russell brand

Oscars producers tell @THR they're going to expand the "In Memoriam" segment of the show to do a tribute "worthy" of those who passed away. This year's list is particularly long — includes Diane Keaton, Robert Redford, Gene Hackman, Robert Duvall, and tragically Rob Reiner.

@maiamindel Watched it for the first time last night and was a little disappointed. Stellan Skarsgard felt like he wasn’t really acting? And while it was shot beautifully I didn’t get the sense it was doing anything daring. Bugonia still my clear favorite of the Oscar nominees

The perfect awards gold trio of much less politically controversial than the other choices, about actors and filmmaking, and an intimate family drama where the drama isn't intractable enough for there to be no reconciliation

settled now fully into my take that the continued success of SENTIMENTAL VALUE in a field of international films all devoted to discussing urgent political issues (IT WAS JUST AN ACCIDENT, THE SECRET AGENT, THE VOICE OF HIND RAJAB) is a sign of deeply pervasive cultural cowardice

@xenocryptsite A good way to do the same thing with movies is go to cable TV (if you have it). I watched a 1948 western last week called Bad Men of Tombstone and I would never have found that even looking the list after list on Letterboxd

@Robot_Bastard @xenocryptsite Neal Stephenson did something similar in Anathem! He still introduced a lot of new words but his preface explained that by “potatoes”, he didn’t mean potatoes exactly, but a tuber somewhat akin to it. Actually important since we get a bit of Earth/other world interactions

@xenocryptsite David Drake put a foreword in all of his "Leary" books about "obviously when the characters say 'feet' or 'meters' they're using some far-future term, just assume that's what's happening and don't worry about it, the point is that the societies use different units of measurement"

@HainesHoag That's true but tbf I do think that a lot of downtime (especially commutes on public transportation) can fit in reading time if you're not on your phone. I also spend a lot of time on coffee shops, etc for various reasons

You can easily read 1 or 2 books at the low end a month by just deleting text-based social media off your phone. I've squeezed like one a week that way and if I had more free time after work I'd probably read even more
