For almost 17 months, Israel has committed war crimes in Gaza. This week, during Ramadan, it is again blocking aid - an act of collective punishment. The UK must do more. We must apply international law equally to all states, allies or not. Because all human lives are equal.

Great to be in Brum again, on @HajBrum panel with int'l health economics students asking all the right questions. The future is bright. Gd to see Anita Charlesworth (adeptly playing a tough HMT economist..) & others too. Good luck in the rest of the course! 🌞 👍 🤞

The BBC spent 20 mins of its evening news on the Holocaust commemorations at Auschwitz, telling us that the message of 'Never again' from survivors was still coming across 'loud and clear'. It then spent 4 mins on the 100,000s people in Gaza returning to the wasteland that were once their homes, family members still buried under the rubble. Clearly, the message of the Holocaust has not been heard by western leaders, who colluded in that 15-month orgy of destruction – nor by the BBC, which gave the genocide in Gaza the most cursory coverage possible.

A look at local newspapers shows why ‘overspend’ is such a big word in today’s new @1adass report. Financial pressures on councils are huge and that in turn affects how money is being spent, with money focused on meeting immediate needs rather than prevention. Thread ⬇️

The spending plans for this year and beyond were going to need a top-up sooner or later. The 2021 Spending Review increases were front-loaded, and 2024/25 budgets always looked tight, even before the inflation spike. @MaxWarnerIFS and I wrote this in 2021!
