@JaneyGodley I guess this could be seen as your wedding gift to them or had you already bought a gift?

I’ve only ever been to one wedding in my life where I was shocked -it was a friends wedding at a restaurant in London and at the end of meal and event we are asked to chip in for dinner/split the bill - nobody mentioned this before- of course I paid, but is that a thing?

@HaleyBanister @alastair_ch I’d say y6. Strong, mature Y5 reader at a pinch, but think they would need to have a pre-interest in sci-fi to give them a head start

Superb. Mortal Engines with giant animals, a dose of near-magical technology and the impact of group psychology making beliefs become real. Epic battles, fascinating world building but ultimately a tale of what it means to belong. A wonderful, wonderful book. Thanks @alastair_ch

Just finished writing an article about the importance of reading aloud to children and how essential it is to find the right book. Took the chance to update the list below with more of my current favourites to share with Key Stage Two. uk.bookshop.org/lists/key-stag…

We’ve really enjoyed planning lessons for The Final Year. We think as many children as possible should be able to get their hands on it. So, we’re giving away a class set! Simply like this post, repost it and follow Literacy Shed on X. We’ll draw a winner at random on 13/2/24

@etaknipsa ...and it gets posted on here to great acclaim most days. 'The air was pungent with the aroma of the vibrant rainbow which cascaded all around us.' Guaranteed to be classed as greater depth 😂

I think we have a problem with primary writing - we are in thrall to overly fancy vocab and flashy literary devices. As a result, we neglect clarity of communication- simple language & accurate grammar. Our new writing curric is an attempt to move from 'Purple Prose' to 'Beige'

A small thread on live marking: I've found, as many of us have, that marking in the moment has by far the most impact and reduces after-school workload. Me and any additional adults always circulating. But teachers say they find it hard, and it's almost always for same reason...

Started with a snuggle under the covers. 3 walks. Dinner of kibble, dog food, turkey mince and turkey hot dog. Will have his post-dinner bone when he wakes up. How can people keep dogs on chains or alone in a backyard? Makes my heart ache to think of all the unloved dogs

@_Reading_Rocks_ We have a class read that we use for reading and writing in the next half term and we also have one for pleasure. The third is a selected book to support our C&E curriculum. The children gain so from the reading sessions 📖

@smithsmm Each word must earn its place… and usually writers do not fancify the drive of the plot. It all started with WOW words which became a form of showing off rather than focussing on the effect being created.

True reading for pleasure comes from a deep connection between you, the book and your class. You can’t create a PowerPoint or format for that. It takes one magic ingredient. You. Reading. And bringing words alive like fireflies lighting up the classroom.

I don’t look at teachers planning, I haven’t looked at teachers planning in years. We don’t have a format. I have medium and long term plans. If I want to know what’s going on I’ll talk to the teacher and have a proper conversation about the work. Planning is for the teacher
