One change that I would make to 7-12 English Language Arts classrooms would be incorporating more contemporary novels into the classroom. Classics are great, but let's get books that discuss relevant issues in the classrooms too! #yalitclass

My most important takeaway from this class is to always find time to read and build recommendations for students in a variety of topics and genres. #yalitclass

Sometimes, we have to help foster the motivation to read. Why not read out loud? #yalitclass
English

My favorite module was week 10: reading aloud. I don't think that there is enough talk about the benefits of reading out loud. There is a lot of push for students to read on their own and that they are responsible enough to do it. #yalitclass

This is my favorite because it is controversial topic that creates a lot of great discussion. We need to think more about this as teachers. #yalitclass

My favorite post that I have written is Banning/Challenging/Censoring Books:

My favorite book this semester was Symptoms of Being a Human. #yalitclass

@hollybayard You will have to let me know what you think! #yalitclass

@Haleynsmiley I bought Cruel Prince last week. Can’t wait to read it! #yalitclass

I have too many books on my to be read list this summer. Here are a couple that I would like to read: The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas and The Cruel Prince by Holly Black #yalitclass

My favorite book that I read this semester was The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian. It was funny, heartbreaking, and insightful. There are lessons for many readers in this wonderful book. #yalitclass

@barbdoty1 That is too bad! My husband likes to read which makes it a lot easier to convince him to read with me. #yalitclass
English

@Haleynsmiley I think that is a fantastic idea. It is so much fun to discuss books with someone close by. My husband is not much of a reader, unfortunately.

I am planning on recruiting my husband to read with me this summer. It is so much more fun to be able to discuss the books with him rather than give him a synopsis! #yalitclass

@barbdoty1 That would have been nice! I wish that there was more done by the school or community to push more reading during the summer for high school students. There was never any suggestions for summer reading or any types of groups in my community. #yalitclass

@Haleynsmiley Me, too. My friends were top priority when I was a kid. My friends were readers which helped me get some reading done though,

When I was a teen, I didn't do a whole lot of summer reading unless it was when the Harry Potter books came out. Most of the time I was working all day and then hanging out with friends. Oh, how times have changed! #yalitclass
English

If you haven't read it, I really recommend reading The 57 Bus by Dashka Slater. #yalitclass
English

My goal is to read a book a day. I like this challenge as it can be any book, including picture books. It can be challenging as summers are still a busy time for everyone! #yalitclass

When giving students a reward for reading, we are saying that they will get something for every time they read. They will expect this and when they stop getting rewards, they stop reading. We need to show/teach them how self-rewarding reading can be. #yalitclass
