Last year, The Atlantic gave me $10K to gamble with. What started as a journalistic gimmick turned into something more... unnerving. My cover story on the online betting boom warping sports, culture, politics, and the psyches of millions of young men: theatlantic.com/magazine/2026/…

🔥Wow -> The ⁦@nytimes⁩ just walked into the ⁦@washingtonpost⁩ backyard, took the sports franchise the Post built and should have fortified, and made it its own. ⁦So now the Times will own DC sports…we are in The Simulation.. nytco.com/press/the-athl…

An update: My time as an Angels beat reporter is ending. I'm moving into a national baseball writer role at @TheAthletic. This team may have stunk. But covering them, for this audience, sure didn't. I wrote about the change, and why I'm not going far: nytimes.com/athletic/70714…

Many Olympic champions report the same experience: A gold medal doesn't feel as good as they think it will. I wrote about decades of social psychology research, the "arrival fallacy," and why we’re all so bad about predicting what will make us happy: nytimes.com/athletic/70657…

Baty & Alvarez 2026 All Stars Fundies
One of the coolest visualizations I've ever seen-- the evolution of the MLB strike zone from 2007 to 2025. The zone has changed dramatically-- going from vibes to nearly matching the rulebook definition perfectly. They're remarkably good. reddit.com/r/baseball/com…

The greatest trick that @washingtonpost ever pulled was convincing employees if they gave everything they could to make the place great, that the institution would love them back. They treated it like a calling and then got treated like a line in a balance sheet. A damn shame.

The Washington Post has been the best newspaper sports section for a long time now. Best staff. Best work. Business wise, I don't understand why a media outlet - especially one that is understandably focused on politics - would give up on sports, which serves as a unifier and one of the rare spots of common interest among Americans.
Corbin Bolies@CorbinBolies

NEW: Washington Post executive editor Matt Murray says the paper will be closing its sports department in its current form and plans to cover it as a "cultural phenomenon." “We plan to retain several reporters to join features” and cover sports through there, he tells staff

Today is National Hat Day! Six years ago, fans put their RALLY CAPS on to celebrate the 100th Anniversary of the Negro Leagues. Thanks to my brother, @JPosnanski, Dan McGinn, and many of you, our “Tip Your Cap” to the Negro Leagues campaign went viral! Honor and Respect! @sn_mlb

The logo and branding are inspired by Ted Williams' "The Science of Hitting" and its iconic strike-zone diagram. Huge credit to my better half, Chelsea, who brought this vision to life with a cohesive logo and visual identity. More to come this week!

Great hitters prepare, train hard, and study tendencies to create an advantage. And the same is true off the field. At Middle Third, I directly support teams, leagues, brands, and other baseball-adjacent organizations with senior-level communications and brand strategy.

Today I'm excited to officially introduce Middle Third Communications -- a baseball-focused advisory I’ve been building over the past couple months. The name comes from the simple idea that the best opportunities lie in the middle third of the strike zone.
