This is a passage from my book, Hurdle-isms -- Hurdle-ism 10: Build Your Mount Rushmore In 2011, when I was the manager of the Pittsburgh Pirates, we started the season strong but ended poorly, the team's 18th consecutive losing season. And the next year? We had the longest seasonal losing streak in North American sports history … ouch. With such a tough position to be in, I needed to have a system of checks and balances in place for my focus and vision to be undistracted and maintain a healthy rhythm. As a lifelong learner, I would need help. My wife, Karla, is my first sounding board, and I also have a posse of people in my life whom I lean into when I'm stuck or looking for answers. I've learned the hard way that asking for help is a superpower and that I'll never have all the right answers. I need to surround myself at home and at the ballpark with people I trust, and I know they will speak truth to me. I don't need bobbleheads to ask for advice or to ask what I'm missing. It was my friend Rod Olson who encouraged me to come up with a Mount Rushmore group of people to connect with – a group I knew I could trust. I knew they cared about me, and I knew they could make me better. We also knew we could call on each other at any time with no judgment and share what was on our mind or what challenges we were walking through. My friend Mike Matheny, former ML Manager of the Kansas City Royals and St. Louis Cardinals, also spoke wisdom to me along the same lines. Mike called it having a board of directors for your life. Both men stated the importance of having people who weren't like me as part of my team – people who are in different lines of work but with similar responsibilities and roles so there was an understanding of the chain of command. One of me is more than enough, and I learn more from people with different back stories than mine.
