A question that has been arising amongst the weather community: why is #Erin still moving to the west this late in the forecast period? Our latest 00Z environmental steering product shows winds generally blowing out of the east in the low levels (700-850 mb), which has evidently been the dominant steering flow in Erin’s forward trajectory thus far. If we climb to the 200-700 mb levels, winds start to veer out of a southwesterly direction. But when will Erin begin to feel the influence of those upper levels winds? The answer is: it seems as if it already is! Our hurricane hunter’s latest assessment of the low-level center has finally begun to show that slight nudge to the northwest. Surface pressures, however, are slowly climbing with every pass from the hurricane hunters. The culprit is that stubborn, yet persistent, northeasterly shear. Though it has not been completely detrimental to Erin’s development, it has resulted not only in the misalignment between the mid-level and low-level vortex but the hindrance in its intensification which would otherwise have been occurring much faster should this impediment not be present. This is consistent with our microwave imagery, showing symmetrical dissimilarities and the focus of Erin’s deepest thunderstorms in the upshear left quadrant of the cyclone. It appears as if this has temporarily halted Erin’s intensification and could at least continue to delay it until the northwesterly-displaced anticyclone positions itself directly overhead and begins to establish more of a uniform outflow across all quadrants.
