The concept of the British middle class is conveniently elastic. On the one hand, it’s used to refer to anyone with a white collar job and a mortgage, on the other it’s defined as families with nannies and kids at private school who can somehow be presented as the national norm.

Message to all those who fret about the economy because of the war against Iran: There is always a price for security. If economies were the only thing that mattered we would have surrendered to Hitler. We didn’t. We fought at great cost in lives and money to preserve our way of life. People who cite the economy as a price not worth paying understand the value of nothing. It is that lazy weak thinking which allowed mass migration. And to those who say it’s not our war: The regime in Iran has caused mayhem throughout the Middle East for decades. Our allies have been attacked. Cyprus was attacked. Diego Garcia was attacked. Yet pathetic weak British politicians want to take the easy route. Some fights are absolutely necessary. The war against the mullahs is one such fight. Grow a backbone.

@MrWinMarshall @ezralevant If the Venetian Christian navy had assisted, the ottomans would have never been able to bombard Constantinople with their canons and take the city. Divided, the Christian world fell for good in the East.

Here in Hagia Sophia, on May 29th 1453, after 900 years of being a Christian cathedral, in the final hours of the Fall of Constantinople, a large number of Christian men, women, children, nuns, monks, priests, and others sought refuge from the Muslim invaders. The Ottomans surged inside and massacred them. On its holy altars they enacted “perversions with our women, virgins and children” including “the Grand Duke’s daughter who was quite beautiful” and forced to “lie on the great altar of Hagia Sophia with a crucifix under her head and then raped” Those who were not murdered were enslaved. Hagia Sophia resembled a “public brothel” before it was turned into a “stable for their horses”, with toppled altars used as troughs. The Hagia Sophia’s main Crucifix was then paraded “in mocking procession” with “spitting and blasphemies and curses”. “Behold the god of the Christians!” They jeered

Stepping into the legendary Italian Chapel on tiny Lamb Holm… 🏰✨ Hand-built and beautifully painted by Italian POWs during WWII. A true testament to resilience, faith, and human creativity in the toughest times. Absolutely breathtaking . #ItalianChapel #OrkneyUncovered

We already consume less energy per person than the G7, EU and China. How much further down the road to serfdom do you want to take us?
David Turver tweet media
Paul Scholes@misterp55

@7Kiwi But what about the amount of energy we use, why is this never considered? Research showed that, globally, we could provide everyone with a decent std of living with half the energy we use today. Given our propensity for unnecessary stuff I’d guess that would be similar in the UK.

@MrMBrown General rule of thumb for the BoE in recent times is to be way too reactive and no where near pro-active enough, almost inevitable…

@alexanderrX_ It’s 57 now - changed years ago as it linked to state pension age so it will change again soon. Your money you earned and saved can be randomly denied you by the government. I would have used an ISA if I’d known.

"just put it in your pension" is the UK answer to hitting 100k. so instead of investing in property or building something now, lock your money away until you're 55. that's not financial advice. that's a trap designed to stop you thinking about the system.

@WillTatton @7Kiwi What like having a condenser dryer that so inefficient you have to run it for 3 hours and then air your duvet cover on a heated rack for 2 hours compared to the 45 mins it used to take in a hot air vented machine?

@sharrond62 It seems the Lords are better at protecting the lives of the elderly, and their financial interests, than they are at protecting those about to be, but not yet, born?! Probably nothing do do with the age, or the interests, of those voting?! 🙄

@ejhchess @rwjdingwall We had a student die in our halls of residence in London in 1993. Suppose it ws Men C at the time. No info or advice, no prophylactic antibiotics - I don't think anyone else caught it.

POV: you're a Medieval customs officer in London, your Latin is just not all that. You look at the cargo and go, Yeah I'm just gonna go with 'baconibus'- it's not like anyone ever reads these other than Gerard the nerd at the treasury. Someone 700yrs later in TNA: 🤔🥓

The earliest formalised English peerage is the Earldom of Arundel, c. 1138. The earliest Scots one, the ancient Earl/mormaerdom of Mar, unknowably predates 1115. If 2019 does prove the last creation, and 2026 the final expulsion, we cannot even tell how far back the roots run

@1642Author @MinooFramroze One of the rare silver linings of being a historian- you see the many Cromwells come and go! Dismantling institutions of government without having a fit and proper replacements inevitably mean failure and rebuild - it’s just a question of long it takes 😬

I've seen some posts suggesting a new government could reverse the expulsion - I don't think that would be possible now because such an act would be open to many negative connotations. What do you think? Removing hereditary peers seems like a deliberate attempt to force a wholesale reform of the HoL ... and prevent it from blocking bills again, however ill-planned they might be! It's left looking like Cromwell's House of Lords - appointed cronies there to rubber stamp.
