On this day in history in 1967, a vocal minority marched through London protesting against Barbara Castle's Road Safety Act because it included restrictions on drink driving.
Very few would now argue against banning drinking driving and it's saved countless lives.

Why is ‘being dependent’ on cars a good thing?
“Wanting” a car and “being dependent on” cars isn’t the same thing at all, as I’m sure David Frost knows if he’s honest.

It's not a 'problem', it's a good thing. In poorer countries people depend on public transport & bikes. When they get richer they want cars because they bring freedom. Public transport will *never* be good enough for a free people to move around on.

In the local Parish Journal today. This is why we campaigners get so annoyed with the ‘you should be wearing hi-vis and a helmet’ comments. The discussion needs to be about tackling dangerous driving and the lack of safe separated space. Thankfully this person was ok.

One of the most successful pedestrian streets in the world, the Strøget in Copenhagen, was filled with cars until a 2 year 1962 pilot project. The opposition argued “no cars means no business,” but the street has been a massive retail success, the city’s busiest shopping street.

@LeicsCountyBike Sadly, most reverted to the original land owners when they ceased to be railways. This was often due to a clause in the original Victorian purchase contract. I can put you in touch with someone who knows lots about this (who is also very pro Active Travel) if you would like?

Has anyone mapped out all the old disused railway lines? I was just looking at a walk in Leicestershire/Rutland and we are riddled with old railway lines. They look undisturbed too. Is this how we get village to village cycle routes in this area?

Cycle lane bollards will be partly reinstated on an Edinburgh road just weeks after they were taken away, after councillors criticised the ‘depressing lawlessness’ of motorists who continuously drove in the now unprotected cycle lane.
