📢SRI LANKA: During 2022 and 2023, authorities responded to unprecedented protests in #SriLanka with unlawful use of tear gas, water cannon, and misuse of batons. The suppression of protest must stop, and authorities must uphold the right to freedom of peaceful assembly in Sri Lanka. Remembering Black July 1983 The 1983 anti-Tamil pogroms in Sri Lanka, commonly referred to as Black July, were a brutal state-sponsored genocide lasting from July 23rd to July 30th. Sinhala mobs across the island attacked, raped, and murdered Tamil people and children in their shops, homes, and at the hospitals. The Sri Lankan government aided Sinhala mobs with voter lists, addresses of Tamil homes, and transportation, which resulted in the killing of over 3,000 Tamil civilians, the destruction of about 5,000 Tamil-owned businesses, and the destruction of around 18,000 homes. The violence triggered a mass exodus where between 90,000 and 150,000 Tamils were displaced, with more than 500,000 Tamils fleeing the island.

Under pouring skies, Baloch mothers and sisters sit on the roads of Islamabad, clutching only photos of their loved ones. No shelter, no justice, no answers. Just pain, sorrow, and unyielding injustice. How long will their voices echo unheard? #ReleaseBYCLeaders #FreeDrMahrangBaloch

Malaiyaha Tamil women working in Sri Lanka's tea plantations face systemic exploitation rooted in gender and ethnic discrimination. Required to pluck 18-22 kilograms of tea leaves daily to earn a basic wage of 1350 rupees, many women work longer hours than men for the same pay, with wages deducted if targets aren't met. Living in substandard line room accommodations, they endure inhumane conditions while lacking access to justice and remedies. Some workers even avoid bathroom breaks to meet impossible quotas - a stark reminder of how contemporary forms of slavery persist, disproportionately affecting women and girls who face multiple layers of discrimination based on gender and ethnicity. 1/3

A blood-stained school uniform hung on barbed wire at today’s “Anaiya Vilakku” (Imperishable Lamp) protest — an evocative art installation demanding international justice for the Chemmani mass graves. The display memorializes schoolgirl Krishanthi Kumaraswamy, who was brutally raped and killed by Sri Lankan Army soldiers in 1996. Her body, along with those of her mother, brother, and neighbor who went searching for her, was secretly buried at the Chemmani site. #Chemmanimassgrave
