The Swiss have voted to keep national military service as ‘male only’, and interestingly, women voted on this too. What happened to my body, my choice? If ‘men shouldn’t be writing laws on women’s bodies’, then why should women be able to vote on legislation impacting mens’?

Women’s universities in South Korea are disappearing. Dongduk Women’s University recently announced it will transition to coeducation starting in 2029. Students at Dongduk Women’s University have protested since last year to preserve its women-only status amid coeducation discussions. During the protests, Dongduk Women’s University students became targets of attacks from public opinion, including businessmen and politicians. Many argue that students at Women's University must be excluded from corporate and public recruitment and isolated from society. Some Police said to the protesters “You should get married later and have a baby and raise it.” Students demanded women’s right to safe education and justice during the protests at Dongduk Women’s University. They also demanded the dismissal of the chairman, who faces allegations of embezzling 7.8 billion won in tuition fees, returning as chairman despite this, and committing further embezzlement. Despite students’ efforts, Dongduk Women’s University appears unlikely to remain a women-only institution. South Korea has only seven women’s universities excluding junior colleges, or 14 including them. In the past, more women’s universities existed than today, but many converted to coeducational institutions starting in the 1990s. Women’s universities serve as essential spaces in South Korean society, where female announcers face “feminazi” labels simply for wearing glasses. They offer courses like women’s studies and date violence prevention that women often find difficult to access in coed universities. Additionally, these institutions provide safety from periodic campus sexual crimes and allow women to freely lie on the grass reading books. Starting in 2012, general student associations supporting sexual crime victims have been abolished across coeducational universities in South Korea. In this context, the disappearance of women’s universities feels deeply regrettable. Men remain unsatisfied, arguing that remaining women’s universities must all vanish based on anti-feminism and claims of male discrimination.
