The Stacks Mountains have been decimated by forestry and wind farms. Disastrous for nature and people. So sad. This needs to be reversed and regulators need to step up.

Ireland's Forest Service is planting tree plantations on high nature value farmland/species rich grasslands that support ground nesting birds, insects incdg pollinators. This has to stop. @VSinkevicius @MichealMartinTD We need trees in the right place not wiping out biodiversity.
Oonagh Duggan@NatureNymph

This fabulous species rich grassland could be planted with forestry because it’s not a Habitats Directive Annex habitat. Go figure. That’s the threshold. No wonder we’re losing high nature value grassland & all the birds, pollinators&othr insects as well as the grassland itself.

#HenHarrier are emblematic of the spirit of Irelands uplands. Sadly the species has declined by 34% since 2000. We have failed to even protect the areas designated for their protection, more than 50% of which are covered in commercial forestry & 250+ wind turbines #SkydancerDay

@ingevanoost1 Hi Inge, curious to know where you got the information from in relation to there being much more Hen Harriers? Also would imagine Pearl Mussels also continue to be in a desperate situation.

A numbers of great examples of such schemes started years ago under the #EIPAgri scheme in Ireland: much more hen harriers already and positive effects on the freshwater mussel population. Worthwhile going to take a look how it works in practice!

📢Co-design of agri-environment schemes needs to include all stakeholders, especially the 'harder to reach' ones @Sheffunisustain @UniRdg_SAPD @ruthielittle @d_christianrose make recommendations for how to enhance inclusivity of multi-actor policy co-design processes 👇

@rayofoghlu @MORANEnv Interestingly policy often ensures they dont emerge...incentives to plant such places with forestry rather than to allow naturally regenerate. Also that type of land is typically excluded from payments including Pillar 1 and Pillar 2. Lovely spot 🙂

@MORANEnv A happenstance indeed. But how do we build policy around such a thing? I often wonder if there is a reluctance on part of government to start assigning value to these places, given they may just emerge anyway, as socio-economics changes, such is the case in parts of Europe

When we look to greater wildness, on our hills, & lowland farms, cattle are a species of wild wooded landscapes, & trees scrub & wood are not hindered but helped by their presense in correct numbers. Whether its Ivy, Ash, Briar etc & here sally or willow its part of their diet

Well and good to say "if we knew then what we know now, we wouldn't have planted the bogs" ...but then we keep replanting them?
