@kmcsween But intervening too early must also be problematic (for the cow especially)? Some farmers seem to intervene too early (default to the ropes and calving jack)…because they are too busy, cows calving at the same time, or they just want the calf out quickly. Any thoughts on that?

There are 3 stages to calving in cows. Stage 1 involves the dilation of the cervix and can be subtle. Restlessness, tail raising, isolation are signs. It can last 2-6 hrs in cows, much longer in heifers. It’s important to intervene if no progress made in those timelines.
