I was adopted and sometimes in the middle of just like, eating my little gluten free penne pasta and dropping tiny prayer hand emojis in slack, I think… who on EARTH is my mom and what the HECK is she doing right now

I’ve been arguing for over a decade that mandatory civil service would make America stronger. The typical response was that it would just be an obstacle between people and their goals…or that it’s uNConStITutioNaL and that we’d rather have violent tribalwarfare between the purple hair baristas and the incels. Now that widespread job loss driven by AI looms, the idea has become a lot more palatable. Go check out the argument @PirateWires. Come at me, bro.

The job market for college grads is bleak, radicalizing America’s underemployed youth. The solution? Anduril cofounder @traestephens proposes a mandatory national service — a new labor force to dig roads, build trails, and better our republic. 👇 piratewires.com/p/ai-is-breaki…

The issue with fire island is people talk about it in such hyperbole. It’s either the most magical wonderful gay utopia ever founded, or a full blown klan rally. I need everyone to start being honest and say it’s a time share off Long Island where getting laid is really easy.

Publishing platform Medium raised over $157 million, at one point burning over $2.6 million per month, in an effort to become something like the “Netflix of publishing” — the default destination for the best writing on the internet, all for $5/month. That is, until it lost many of its best writers and market share... @HarrisSockel recounts the rise and fall of one of the most influential platforms of the last decade, featuring new details on a failed union drive, the platform’s censorial speech policies, erotica on Joe Biden’s homepage (yes), and the battle of the business models that reshaped the internet. Last night my friend's husband asked me why I quit drinking and I said "Well actually, tomorrow morning you can read my 5,000 word essay answering that very question." newyorker.com/culture/the-we…

My mom passed away last night with 10 family members by her side. She was the first in our family to escape the Soviet Union. She arrived in California with nothing, hustled as a single mom of 4, and achieved the American dream in every respect. She was crafty, resourceful, and could make humor out of any situation. Here’s a photo of us when money was tight: I asked to be Aladdin for Halloween, so she dressed me up as a Russian gypsy and thought I wouldn’t notice. April 20, 1950 - June 21, 2026

There's a lot of criticism of Substack from the Bluesky crowd that it should be more censorious and eject people with particularly unsavory things to say. Is the fate of Medium a cautionary tale for platforms that go down that path?

medium was burning $2.6M a month when they replaced the phrase "free and open" from the company's rules with "a safe, respectful, and welcoming environment." then came substack. the untold story of what should have been the next great publishing giant from @HarrisSockel

Perhaps we can't build models into great writers because the entire project of AI alignment is to suppress a model's shadow, while the greatest authors all seem to draw from theirs.

it's *** extremely *** hard to see clearly when you're working inside a startup, but when you leave, things magically get clearer. here, my best attempt at the story of what happened at Medium, and how too much money (and time) choked what could have been a publishing giant 👇
