One of the biggest mental blocks of the left is their inability to think about value creation in any way other than manual labor. A good counter-example is the professional athlete, or pop-star. Who did Tayler Swift exploit to become a billionaire?
𐌁𐌉Ᏽ 𐌕𐌉𐌌𐌉@OrevaZSN

No one “earns” a billion dollars. No one can work a billion times harder than anyone else. There is no good, ethical, or righteous billionaire. That kind of wealth can only be accumulated through the exploitation of the working class. No exceptions.

@berry_mory Yes indeed. But for someone earning £1m+ like Gary did, that represents 2.5% of his income being taxed at 60%+, but he’s representing it as if it’s his whole income.

@HarryDIsraeli There’s a well-known quirk called the “60% tax trap”. It applies when income is between £100k & £125,140k. In this range, you lose your PA (£12,570). For every £2 you earn, you lose £1 of tax-free allowance. Creating an effective marginal rate of 60% on that slice of income.

Terrible, vindictive, ideological politics. Not a responsible steward of the land, but instead a partisan attack on political opponents because a percentage of the constitutency voted the wrong way. Atrocious.
Nigel Farage MP@Nigel_Farage

If you vote Reform you will not have an illegal migrant deportation facility in your area. We will hold migrants awaiting deportation in constituencies that vote Green instead. You get what you vote for.

@ThankYouYeezy It is nasty, that’s for sure. But it’s ‘only’ between 100-125k. Past that it’s 47%. It’s the withering away of the tax free allowance that takes it half your money.

Anytime I see someone reply to “we should learn from Singapore” with “but it’s a city state,” I just assume they have outsourced their thinking to whichever cliché fired first and can’t grasp first principles. This is the analytical level of telling a state school it cannot learn anything from Eton because Eton has fewer pupils. Nobody is asking the UK to become Singapore, any more than the state school is being asked to become Eton. The argument is about statecraft and what a lean, competent civil service can deliver, which are portable lessons rather than geographic ones. Pretending otherwise is autocomplete dressed up as worldliness.

@RollingHedge @Dr_W_E_Bulmer @RokoMijic Anytime I hear someone saying we should be like Singapore I just assume that are a bit stupid. A city state is obviously going to have different needs than a place like the U.K, there is no part of Singapore that is even close to the poorest parts of the U.K

@LStoerseth 45% is the top rate on PAYE, and before that, when you hit 40%, your NI drops to 2%. So effectively it’s 32% taxable from £12570-£50270, then 42% up to £125140(but marg rate is 60% from £100-£125k, then 47% on £125140 and over.

@NotTheTobes When you earn £1m +, your marginal rate is 46-47%. It’s only 62-63% for 25k of that for the reasons you stated.

@HarryDIsraeli Modest push back, when you earn £100k-125k the loss of your personal allowance does mean your real rate of tax is up to 60%. It’s a bit of a rotter

A 62-year-old female Morrison’s worker was sacked after trying to physically apprehend a teenage thief. The store defended the dismissal by arguing that she endangered herself and her colleagues. The world has gone completely mad. thesun.co.uk/news/38976595/…

If I’m paying 5 employees £12.71 ph and have to increase to £15 I have to find an extra £29k+ a year (if you include NI and NEST etc based on 40hrs per week) does anyone think a business like a coffee shop can magic up an extra £29k + a year without putting up prices?

According to Natural England's modelling, the fish disco will save just 0.083 salmon and 0.028 sea trout per year. That works out to over £280,000 per fish saved. For £700 million, we could wipe out Somerset’s £41 million council deficit for a decade, fix every single pothole in the county, build a rail link to Minehead, and make every bus in Somerset free for years. Or we could just make the electricity that Hinkley produces cheaper, and we'd all benefit. Being a poor country is a choice.

Natural England have decided that £700m spent protecting fish isn’t enough. They want EDF to do even more before they’ll let them switch the plant on. This will cause a big delay. Put simply, Natural England is a threat to our energy security. telegraph.co.uk/business/2026/…

The Mail doesn't think seem to think workers, of all ages, are worth £15 an hour. That's fair pay for a fair day's work, with money workers will put back into the economy. We are the party for workers. Vote Green on 7th May.

The UK is riddled by people and groups - often self serving tax payer bureaucracies, who will do anything to stop progress. Natural England should be removed from having influence on infrastructure and forced to focus on their main task of maintaining nature reserves.

Sensible points. But too late. It’s over. You’re an even bigger busted flush than the Tories. Two-thirds of your MPs and over half the cabinet on course to lose their seats. Bye. The problem is that what comes next unlikely to be any better. We really are in trouble.
Luke Akehurst@lukeakehurst

I don't think many Labour colleagues will appreciate coming back from a day canvassing for Thursday's elections to see energy being wasted on leadership speculation and talk about deliberately causing byelections, most of which comes across as rather entitled and about self-interest rather than the stability and success of the party.
