None can be compared to the encounter with the Laestrygonian giants when the whole Odysseus and his crew came to total annihilation. Unlike the Cyclops, where cunning gave him a chance to escape, or even Scylla, where some of his men survived, the giants left almost no room for strategy. They hurled massive boulders from the cliffs, smashed the ships like toys, and speared the fleeing sailors as if they were fish. In a matter of moments, 11 of Odysseus’ 12 ships were destroyed, and nearly his entire crew was wiped out. What makes this encounter especially terrifying is its sheer hopelessness. Odysseus couldn’t outfight them, negotiate with them, or outsmart them. His survival came down to one fortunate decision, he had moored his own ship outside the harbor while the others sailed in. Watching almost all of his companions die while knowing he could do nothing to save them makes the Laestrygonian attack one of the most horrifying and traumatic moments in The Odyssey.

What makes this scene in the Odyssey so haunting isn't even Scylla, it’s Odysseus having to watch his best men scream his name while he stands there completely helpless. Pure nightmare fuel.

This scene was taken from Book 12 of Homer's Odyssey, describing the terrifying moment before Scylla attacks Odysseus' ship: "Scylla snatched six of my comrades from the hollow ship, the bravest and strongest of my crew. As I looked back toward the fast ship and my men, I saw their hands and feet high above me, suspended in the air. In their agony, they cried out, calling upon my name for the last time."

Well, the 2026 film explicitly grounds the war in Helen running off with Paris, but frames the conflict as a breakdown of fundamental societal trust. In Nolan’s vision, the war’s catalyst is secondary to the weaponized breach of Zeus's sacred law. By using a sacred religious offering as a deceptive weapon, the Greeks shattered the foundational social contract, transforming the entire war into an act of systemic self destruction.

I’m curious… the books and the 1997 version made the cause of the Trojan War pretty clear, but the 2026 version kinda skipped over it. What was the actual reason for the Trojan War in this movie? It didn’t feel nearly as well explained.

Odysseus was never actually favored across the pantheon, Poseidon actively tormented him for a decade. His divine standing was entirely tied to Athena, who respected his calculating intellect over brute force. ​The gods rewarded restraint while his crew repeatedly succumbed to reckless impulse and hubris. When his men slaughtered Helios’s cattle out of short-sighted hunger, they sealed their own doom through fatal lack of discipline.

I think Scylla and Charybdis were the most terrifying for Odysseus. The Cyclops was horrifying because he and his men were trapped with a monster that saw them as nothing more than food, but Odysseus still had his greatest weapon, his mind. He could think, plan, and find a way out. With Scylla and Charybdis, there was no clever escape. Odysseus had to face a situation where he knew he couldn’t save everyone.He had to make a choice that would cost the lives of his men, and there was nothing he could do to stop it. The Cyclops tested his courage, but Scylla and Charybdis tested his heart. The fear of knowing you are powerless to protect the people following you is what made that encounter the most terrifying.

Nolan never actually explains why Calypso is stuck on that island alone, Odysseus just washes up and she’s already there. The real reason is straight from mythology, she’s the daughter of the Titan Atlas, and Zeus banished her to Ogygia for backing the losing side in the war against the Olympians. Even her name literally means ‘the one who hides.’ She didn’t choose isolation, Zeus sentenced her to it.

If we'd watch the same show, I think they volunteer to go. Plus, this your take misses the political reality of Westerosi diplomacy. Sending Lucerys to Storm’s End was the safest, most logical diplomatic assignment on paper, backed by blood ties and an explicit oath. ​Rhaenyra did not hand the Greens an opportunity, Aemond challenged sacred guest right out of personal malice. Blaming the sender rather than the perpetrator ignores how established feudal customs failed to contain Targaryen dragon warfare.

Some assume Telemachus inherits the bow along with the throne, he doesn’t get that scene at all. Nolan actually cuts that whole epilogue, Telemachus becomes king purely because Odysseus abdicates out of guilt, not because he proves anything with the bow himself. Whether he could even string it is left completely unanswered. Odysseus doesn’t stay king. He hands the throne to Telemachus and sails away with Penelope in exile. But the bow test that legitimized rulers in Homer’s version, we never see if Telemachus can even do it, that scene just doesn’t exist in this version
