Dear Judge Bauer, I am writing to you as a deeply concerned citizen to express my profound disappointment regarding the sentence recently handed down to Anaiya Harris in February 2026. While I understand that the court must operate within the confines of plea agreements, the sentence of six months in jail and five years of probation for the deliberate, calculated murder of a helpless dog is, in my opinion, wholly inadequate. The details of this case, locking a dog in a crate, placing it inside a closet, and sealing the door with spray foam, demonstrate a level of sadistic, premeditated cruelty that warrants a punishment far stricter than this lenient outcome. The fact that the animal died in agony from starvation and dehydration, compounded by the report that Ms. Harris showed a "complete lack of remorse," makes this sentence difficult for the community to accept. An aggravated cruelty to animals conviction under N.Y. Agriculture & Markets Law § 353-a is a Class E Felony, which carries a potential two-year term of incarceration. The final sentence does not reflect the gravity of the act nor the suffering of the victim, nor does it provide sufficient deterrence to others. I respectfully urge you to consider the outrage and pain this case has caused in your community and to ensure that, in future cases of severe animal abuse, the sentence aligns with the calculated cruelty of the crime.
