@BonnieCrombie @fordnation its not about tariffs; it's about the federal situation, stabilized w Trudeau in charge til March 9 - Ford's last window to run with a 'hated' Liberal in Ottawa.
And everybody knows it, Dougie. Your advisers aren't geniuses (but they are evil).

First of all, Doug Ford has been hinting at an early election since before Donald Trump won.
Now he’s trying to justify spending $175 million of taxpayers’ money on an early and unnecessary election because he “needs a mandate”.
So @fordnation… where was the mandate to give $8.3 billion worth of Greenbelt lands to your friends?
Where was the mandate to spend $1 billion on booze in the corner store?
Where was the mandate for $2 billion on a shady deal for a spa at Ontario place?
No one is buying it Doug.

Doug Ford suggests Donald Trump slapping tariffs on Canadian exports would give him a reason to call an early Ontario election. Story by @CBCToronto’s @lanesharrison #onpoli cbc.ca/news/canada/to…

@spaikin @fordnation @CanadianPM @JustinTrudeau @BobRae48 This is a Federal issue. we don't need Ford (or Smith) grandstanding and we certainly don't need him pretending it justifies an election.

@jen_keesmaat user fees have a role in managing demand for public services - where that is desirable, and could be an option for road use - gas taxes are even better. Development charges are also a kind of user fee - they recover capital costs associated with growth related development.
English

User fees, and pricing in general, is a conservative principle.

@jen_keesmaat @TorontoStar Always more taxes with the left.

@BonnieCrombie build the rail link; cancel 413. simple. Say it, do it!
English

I fought for this as Mayor. Over and over again.
Like everything with Ford, he’ll make big promises before an (early?) election, but he could’ve been working on this for years.
Team Bonnie will actually deliver more for you — including more transit to improve your commute.

NEW: Ford gov. directs @Metrolinx to undertake work to possibly build "GO 2.0," which is the missing link project that would build a new freight rail line to free up more passenger train service on Milton and Kitchener lines. This has been a long-time #Mississauga priority.

Value of Canada building permits down 5.9% in November - Reuters : how can this be? Ford has given developers all the zoning they want, overturned heritage and environment protections, gutted municipal development fees, even invited them to his parties! stocks.apple.com/A1YARl09RSRe57…
English

Ford government can now overrule conservation authorities on development permits (and municipalities using Ministerial overrides (114 times) or calling up the new 26 'strong (can overrule their elected councils) mayors' – vote for developers, vote Ford! winnipegfreepress.com/canada/2025/01…

@32a80064 @jen_keesmaat this isn't about me. Blaming prices on DCs is wrong and a developer argument to increase profitability. Taxpayers are screwed if they have to pick up the cost of growth infrastructure. But i'm a renter - i don't care: if you want to pay more taxes, awesome.
English

@Hatton4Mayor @jen_keesmaat And when you bought your home, DCs were likely zero. Young people are sick of socialism for the old and 'cost attribution' for themselves. Maybe we should be asking people to pay their full healthcare bill too, wouldn't want any public money going to private providers!
English

Municipalities in Canada kept property taxes low and delivered excellent services by quietly tacking fees onto the price of new homes under the guise of “infrastructure costs.” This strategy drove up housing prices but flew under the radar for years.
Then they got greedy. Fees skyrocketed, just as interest rates began climbing. Borrowing to build or buy became expensive, and construction ground to a halt—despite strong demand for new homes.
The fix? Scrap the outdated development charge model. It’s become a roadblock, not a solution.
Instead, provincial governments should establish Development Infrastructure Funds, rewarding municipalities that fast-track housing projects with the resources to address infrastructure needs. It’s time to make building homes easier, not harder.
Steve Saretsky@SteveSaretsky
The cost to deliver new housing supply is simply not economical. In Toronto, municipal fees alone are reaching nearly $200K per door. Totally nuts.
English

@ShabbatSlalom @32a80064 @jen_keesmaat i was there when DCs were introduced in 1990 to replace political deals. They are fair, regulated, open to appeal and review. Ford prefers private deal making , which is an invitation for corruption. Nothing personal here, my age is irrelevant, just as DCs have been to prices.
English

@Hatton4Mayor @32a80064 @jen_keesmaat Development fees on a 1 bed are 10x what they were 15 years ago.
"successful cost attribution" - another boomer pulling up the ladder after getting his own.
English

@CJ_Casselman @jen_keesmaat i know: the city can pay developersgrocery bills. then the price of houses will surely go down
English

@Hatton4Mayor @jen_keesmaat What a wild take. Exactly what I expect from a politician.
English

@CJ_Casselman @jen_keesmaat why not offer to buy their concrete too?
English

@CJ_Casselman @jen_keesmaat why would any of you want to pay debeloper fees for them???????
English

@CJ_Casselman @jen_keesmaat i'm not one. just a rational person who cares about truth
English

@Hatton4Mayor @jen_keesmaat Well, the high fees also raises the price of housing on the secondary market. That has a bigger impact.
English

@Conrguy @jen_keesmaat DCs are set every 4-5 years. they know about the roof
English

@Conrguy @jen_keesmaat just like you would pay less for a house if the roof needed fixing
