She is correct. But the issue is not that the thalamus has not been explored, the issue is that the TRN sits at the center of several nuclei. It is a highly complex hub for nuclei responsible for some of the most important parts of your brain and body.
For example..motor control, vision, hearing, sleep, etc. (as she said, leaky thalamus affects these areas leading to SEEING things, HEARING things, SLEEP DISRUPTION). The issue with treating the source is actually a lack of pharmaceutical precision.
There is no single treatment that can target the leaky thalamus without disrupting the surrounding nuclei because of the complexity of the placements. Treatment of the leaky thalamus could result in devastating side effects by altering the surrounding nuclei.
Now, while it’s true that the leaky thalamus is already disrupting the surrounding nuclei, at least we know in what way they are affected AND how to HELP manage them (attacking the accelerator, hippocampus)…to attempt to target the TRN without pharmaceutical precision could cause profound and unmanageable side effects well beyond hallucinations and confusion.
I can see her excitement, the passion radiates off of her. For that reason, I think that she’d be a great researcher on this topic.
I believe that she should now proceed with exploring the possibility of developing pharmaceutical precision that can target the source rather than the dopamine driver, the hippocampus.
This will be no easy task as I’m sure scientists have tried and failed. I think a main driver for the lack of study and delay in finding the precision needed, boils down to the fact that only 1% percent of the population has schizophrenia, and therefore the research is not worth it as it will not be profitable in comparison to other studies that will result in a surplus of money for big Pharma, which is what gets funded instead of this.
It is very likely that if a passionate donor was found, somebody who has a personal vendetta against schizophrenia due to family history and such, she may be able to make this happen.
May the odds be ever in her favor.
