In this forgotten stretch of Balochistan, where addiction is chronic and infrastructure lacking, a class of 49 students is defying the odds one lesson at a time. My latest piece for ⁦@dawn_comdawn.com/news/1913653

"There is no Eid in the house anymore, Balli says. It is not that they cannot afford new clothes; they can. But happiness, she says, does not come from cloth. It comes from a heart at ease, and theirs are not."

This piece ends here, but I am still haunted by the eyes of Fazal’s 11-year-old son, who listened to it all in silence, and whose name I forgot to ask. My latest for ⁦@HRCBalochistanhrcbalochistan.com/stitching-thro…

I still appear before courts, police stations, and deputy commissioners, seeking action, but nothing happens. At least the day I reunite with my son, I can tell him proudly: for you, my son, I did not remain silent. I fought for you with whatever will was left in me.” @HazaranRahim hrcbalochistan.com/for-you-my-son…

My year in solitary confinement has not broken me. My peaceful fight for Baloch rights in Pakistan goes on I’ve reflected on why our peaceful protests are treated as a threat, when nonviolent political engagement is the very foundation of a democratic society. Resistance is often the path to justice, and such movements should not be suppressed. When a state turns its power against human rights groups and peaceful political actors, it reveals not strength, but weakness. Our peaceful resistance has allowed the message to reach far and wide. People of conscience are aware of atrocities in Balochistan, yet greater global attention is needed to end the genocide. theguardian.com/global-develop…

I addressed the 61st session of the United Nations Human Rights Council, where I presented the grave and ongoing human rights situations in Balochistan. I underscored the alarming rise in enforced disappearances and extrajudicial killings—violations that continue to intensify in the absence of accountability and justice. As a responsible political voice, I have consistently raised concerns regarding these anti-humanitarian practices and have called for transparent investigations and accountability for those responsible. Regrettably, these appeals have largely gone unanswered, leaving affected families in a state of prolonged distress, uncertainty, and grief. Through this platform, I called upon state authorities and international bodies, including the @UN , to take the concerns of the Baloch people seriously and to ensure the full protection and equal application of their fundamental human rights. I further stressed the need for responsible, independent and fact-based reporting by national and international media on the ground realities. Addressing these challenges requires a collective and principled commitment. All stakeholders must fulfill their responsibilities in upholding truth, justice and human dignity.

This is no secret. There are many reports about his involvement in mass killing. This is an article from 2014 about the mass graves found in Tootak: 'One name that frequently appears in official conversations about the camp and the graves is Shafiq Mengal.'dawn.com/news/1094180

Human Rights Violations in Balochistan: February 2026 | HRCB Report The Human Rights Council of Balochistan has documented a grave escalation in human rights violations across Balochistan during February 2026. A total of 234 cases of enforced disappearances and 87 killings were recorded within a single month. Among the disappeared, 233 were men, including 9 teenagers, and 1 was a woman. Only 37 individuals have returned, while the majority remain missing. Students were the most affected group, followed by labourers, shopkeepers, and farmers. Most abductions were carried out during night raids on homes, primarily by CTD and FC personnel. During the same period, 87 killings were reported, including 30 individuals who had previously been subjected to enforced disappearance. State forces, intelligence agencies, and state-backed local militias were responsible for 90% of the reported killings. These violations intensified sharply following the Baloch Liberation Army attacks on 31 January 2026. In the aftermath, multiple regions, including Quetta, Nushki, Kech, Hub, Gwadar, and Panjgur, witnessed indiscriminate firing and shelling by state forces, along with widespread house raids, home demolitions, looting, communication blackouts, and forms of collective punishment.
