This scene is suffering from what I call “Dorian Pavus Syndrome”. For those of you unaware, Dorian Pavus is a character in Dragon Age:Inquisition who is a pretty cool dude. He’s suave, intelligent, calculating, everything you could want from a mage character. He’s also gay. Whatever, he didn’t really seem to make a big deal about it at first and I wasn’t planning on romancing the dude, so I didn’t care. However, his character quest is where I saw the first examples of the current issues with scenes like this. His entire character quest is us going out of our way to talk with his father about reconciling the complications of being gay and being the oldest son in the family. They could have done anything else that may have included this theme, maybe some espionage where you discuss this in the middle of waiting if you REALLY wanted to talk about it. But no, we go to a tavern and talk about Dorian being gay, because that’s his central character trait now. Not only this, but this is in the midst of what’s basically an archlich amassing an army with a ZOMBIE DRAGON, and traveling to talk to Dorian’s father takes time, time in which you can assume this hell on earth is amassing forces. We could be taking steps to prevent this, but no, we gotta talk about Dorian being gay. Were this some simple adventuring party with a slice of life angle, I would be fine with this quest, but you slapped it in the middle of an apocalyptic scenario and flanderized your own character in the middle of his first appearance. That’s where my issue lies. This scene reeks of that as well. If they really wanted to do this, they should have focused up and allow Will to come out when there is downtime to his friends, but they went out of their way to do this when things are probably dire, and that’s what gets people annoyed. Idgaf if he’s gay, the world is at stake! Know how to address your themes appropriately and people would accept them more. When you make it THE thing to talk about, it annoys people because of this clear pedestal you want to place this on. I now await the swarm of people who will go “holy yap” and not engage with my points at all.
