@johnnyrock45057 @cranbypaws_ Graffiti mostly took off in new York and is almost like holy grounds for lots of graffiti artists/writers. It is culture just like cars in Japan or music in Liverpool. It doesn't involve most people but is still culture.

@iggie404 I think its more to do with the food we grew and farmed traditionally. The crops we grew (and still do) are very bland which lead to bread meat and/or boiled veg being most good meals. Potato is one of the blandest crops but is the most common.

@AI_EmeraldApple I think most people who started watching anime when it became popular in the west still see it as a child's cartoon like adventure time or something instead of what it really is.

I think tourists, especially the post Covid kind, are shocked by this because so many went into Anime looking for comfort in a world that seemed bleak... during the massive proliferation of cookie-cutter isekai. In the wide world of Anime, this one isn't even 3/10 in terms of how dark it is. It's got plenty of over-the-top humor that keeps it really light. If you think this is the worst of anime... you really are a tourist. In Japan, animation is another form of media, often used to express stories that are larger than life, and Yani Neko just fits that bill, showing addiction in a dark, over-the-top manner with a lot of realism... despite the MC being a catgirl. It's so weird that this anime has brought the worst out of the anime fandom, where so many are too keen on "policing" what people are allowed to like. Don't like it? Then just voice your opinions and be done with it. Anime and its culture don't owe you comforting stories for you to gain a new waifu, or enter a fantasy world where you feel bliss. It didn't butcher any existing IP, it didn't rip apart ancient stories, and it's not trying to spread some kind of woke political message. It's a harsh, tacit warning about the dangers of addiction in its many forms and how it will lead people towards an early grave, wrapped in the absurd black comedy mocking the tragedy.
