Originally, the studio wanted O. J. Simpson to play the Terminator, while Arnold Schwarzenegger was supposed to be Kyle Reese. But during a meeting with Cameron, Arnold began explaining how the robot should behave: cold, emotionless, and moving like an unstoppable machine. Cameron was so impressed that he decided to cast him as the T-800, creating one of the most iconic characters in science fiction history.

Concept art by James Cameron for Terminator 🔥 Before filming The Terminator, James Cameron had already designed much of the movie’s visual universe through conceptual sketches inspired by a nightmare he had while sick in Rome. His drawings featured metallic endoskeletons, futuristic war landscapes, and much darker, horror-driven versions of the Terminator, with an aesthetic closer to cyberpunk horror. That vision ultimately defined the visual identity of the entire franchise.

At the time, this was a huge moment for Heavy Metal. The magazine was still young and far from mainstream, yet 20th Century Fox trusted it to help launch one of the studio’s biggest productions of the era. Long before Comic-Con marketing became standard for blockbuster films, this collaboration showed how deeply sci-fi fandom, underground art, and genre cinema were already connected. 🔥📖

Before becoming a sci-fi horror landmark, Alien first invaded the pages of Heavy Metal in April 1979. Months before the film hit theaters, the magazine published an exclusive preview of Alien, introducing readers to the terrifying world imagined by Ridley Scott and the unforgettable designs of H. R. Giger, Mœbius and Chris Foss 🚀👽 @moebiusofficiel

Gandahar (1987), directed by René Laloux, tells the story of a peaceful and advanced planet disrupted by an army of metal men that turn its inhabitants into stone; the warrior Sylvain is sent to uncover the source of the threat, which is revealed to be a giant artificial brain born from the planet’s own scientific experiments, blending science fiction, time travel, and a critique of technology, with the interesting fact that it is based on a novel by Jean-Pierre Andrevon. 🎬

The amazing movie poster art by the Swedish illustrator Kilian Eng ✨ @DWDSGN Kilian Eng is a Swedish illustrator born in Stockholm in 1982, known for his retrofuturistic landscapes filled with monumental architecture, alien technology, and atmospheres inspired by 1970s and 1980s European science fiction. His style mix influences from Moebius, Druillet, Lovecraft, and psychedelic sci-fi, using massive compositions where human figures seem insignificant against cosmic worlds and impossible structures. Alongside his books Object 5 and Object Compendium, he has worked for Heavy Metal, Disney, HBO, Marvel, Mondo, and Warner Bros. Many of his illustrations reinterpret universes such as Star Wars, Dune, Blade Runner, Zelda, and Studio Ghibli through a style that combines European comics and vintage sci-fi poster aesthetics.

The comic perfectly represents the 90s “bad girl comics” aesthetic: graphic violence, morally ambiguous characters, and a dark, exaggerated visual style. Texeira’s painted artwork is especially remembered for its heavy, dirty, almost biomechanical look, blending gothic horror with 90s pulp aesthetics.

Among his most shared illustrations are deformed reinterpretations of the xenomorphs from Alien, aggressive versions of the hunter from Predator and the Engineers from Prometheus. 🛸 You can find more of his work at tumblr.com/spaghettibasta…

The artist Spaghetti Bastard built a wild and instantly recognizable visual identity through biomechanical creatures and scenes drenched in industrial grime, recreating the organic nightmare aesthetic of H. R. Giger. 👽

Ted Nasmith is one of those artists whose work feels less like illustration and more like fragments recovered from an ancient dream. Born in Canada in 1956, he became a defining visual force behind the world of J. R. R. Tolkien through his richly detailed paintings for The Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit, and especially The Silmarillion. His art blends colossal landscapes, mythic architecture, and a romantic atmosphere that feels closer to classical European painting than modern fantasy concept art. Tolkien himself even saw some of Nasmith’s early paintings when he was still a teenager and sent him a letter commenting on them — an experience that quietly shaped the rest of his career. Beyond official calendars, illustrated editions, and collector books, Nasmith also created artwork inspired by George R. R. Martin and composed music influenced by Middle-earth.
