@NortonMpls No suggestions on a stroller but the dog is adorable! You could try putting new wheels on front to keep it going longer while you look for a new one.

Anyone have a good dog stroller recommendation? We’re running into a bad shopping cart wheel situation with this one (which was purchased years ago and has a lot of miles).

@CousinNate2 @arenella1 The elitism is staggering. Europeans traveling to another country is as easy and cheap for them as traveling to another state is for us. It’s simple proximity, accessibility, time and money. It’s also a lazy argument.

@HelentheMiniCo1 @arenella1 I remember a few years ago this same argument was happening on here when I was in Miami for work. I had been in Seattle for work barely 48 hours earlier and I had to explain to a dumb loud British person that Seattle to Miami is literally farther than London to Baghdad lol

Most Americans have never traveled outside the US with exception of Caribbean vacations. Unlike Europeans who visit other countries frequently, Americans lack any understanding of how significantly cultural and social norms differ from one country to another. I spent a month in

@llihhcruhc1 @HelentheMiniCo1 @arenella1 I was having a random chat in a Bed & Breakfast near Perth, talking to this lady who was cleaning & doing the vacuuming. Turned out she had gone on a cargo ship to Japan in 1970, crossed the USSR and ended up in prison in East Berlin for passport violations. Australians travel!

@stauffenbert @arenella1 that’s the lazy argument. We simply cannot travel to other countries as easily as Europeans unless we’re comfortably set with time and money. Most of us aren’t. The majority of us simply can’t and it’s elitist saying we should anyway.

@stauffenbert @arenella1 That’s the valid argument. I have over a dozen Spanish language channels on my tv alone. I have 9 accessible large public libraries. I have countless ethnic grocery stores and restaurants. I ride buses and like to travel by train. The knowledge is there, it’s the travel that’s

“Piqued her interest,” not “peeked her interest.” “Segue,” not “Segway.” “For all intents & purposes,” not “for all intensive purposes.” “Old wives’ tales,” not “old wise tales.” “Taken for granted,” not “taken for granite.” Most of these can be avoided if you read often.

Not to be THAT dictionary, but… It’s ‘per se,’ not ‘per say.’ It’s ‘dog-eat-dog world,’ not ‘doggy-dog world.’ It’s ‘hunger pangs,’ not ‘hunger pains.’ It’s ‘one and the same,’ not ‘one in the same.’ It's 'buck naked,' not 'butt naked.'

@Claireclou @arenella1 I agree. The lack of curiosity is inexcusable. I can head to a neighborhood market and talk to people, try different foods or pick up a magazine. It’s blaming it on not leaving the country that I find elitist.

@HelentheMiniCo1 @arenella1 Americans can still read about other countries and their histories/cultures, even if they don’t visit, and watch films and shows from other countries. You can learn a lot this way, even if you don’t have the money to travel much.

@llihhcruhc1 @arenella1 You also have more vacation time and I suspect more disposable income. Americans are chained to shit jobs with shit benefits by our extortionist healthcare system. Our limited vacation time tends to be eaten up with family obligations.

@HelentheMiniCo1 @arenella1 Well Australians are less wealthy ( slightly) than Americans and much further from Europe- or anywhere else really- and they travel all around the world. Frequently. So there goes your geography and demographics arguments in one hit!

@ktdu33 @arenella1 The point is most of us can get to Maine and Mississippi. We can load up the car and spend a long weekend or school vacation in Biloxi or Bangor. We can’t just pop over to Spain or Italy like you can. It’s just not practical. We also don’t have the vacation time.

@HelentheMiniCo1 @arenella1 ‘Travelling’ within the US may clock up the miles but it doesn’t introduce different languages, cultures, traditions, history, etc. Maine & Mississippi? A couple of centuries of white history. European countries? Roman Empire? Greek civilisation? Comparison?

@kulturdesken @arenella1 Lack of vacation time in the US, cost of travel especially with kids, and family obligations. A lot of us spend weekends at the beach or in the mountains. Our limited vacation time tends to be used for weddings, trips to see the grandparents, etc.

From an outsiders perspective who has lived in the US I was struck by the amount of jingoistic propaganda. I've never seen anything close to it anywhere else. That together with constant wars and the erosion and decline of the middle class seem to be obvious reasons for not travelling abroad.

@Tomcastlehume @Daedalus6 @arenella1 I travel farther to spend a weekend with my daughter than most Europeans do to leave their country. The US is one country with approximately the same land mass as Europe. Europe has 44 countries. It’s really, really easy to leave your country when it’s as big as a US state.

@Daedalus6 @arenella1 I didn’t say Americans don’t travel. I did say comparing Europe/American leaving their countries is bullshit elitism.

The sheer misogynism of our general society shows hugely from the fact Caroline Kennedy has never been considered as a future president of the United States. While her brother John Kennedy Jr was always considered, because he was male, handsome and athletic. Yet if we compare them Caroline Kennedy was the better Kennedy in almost everything. School, Arts, family relationships, she finished at the top ten of her law school and passed the NY state bar on her first attempt. From every report there is, she is generally admired and highly accomplished. I'm kinda sideyeying how her son Jack is trying to get in politics now, when you have this accomplished person already, who is coming from a historic family, has faced so much diversity in her life and still walks tall. I don't know just a few thoughts.
