19 years since Robert Levinson went missing on Iran’s Kish Island - and the third annual Hostage and Wrongful Detainees Day, which remembers Americans like Bob held unjustly overseas. I’ve been privileged to have a longstanding friendship with Bob’s family - who has given so much to make sure American stories like Bob’s are never forgotten. Their advocacy, support, and encouragement has always made sure the importance of his story is never lost on me. And even almost 20 years later, Bob is on our minds as much as ever before. The FBI continues to offer up to $5 million for information leading to Bob’s recovery, location, and return - working with our @StateDept partner reward as well. Having a loved one wrongfully detained is a pain no family should ever have to experience. Bob’s family - and all American families of those held hostage - deserve justice. This @FBI will keep working day and night to give it to them.

Joining the entire country today observing U.S. Hostage and Wrongful Detainee Day, where we remember those held in captivity and their loved ones. This is a day that is personal for me - I’ve been privileged to support the mission of bringing hostages home throughout my career. It’s a mission that continues every single day here at the FBI. Dealing with a loved one wrongfully captured or detained is a pain that no family should ever be forced to endure. This @FBI will continue to work tirelessly and marshal full resources until every American is brought home and we bring justice to all of their families.

Today is U.S. Hostage and Wrongful Detainee Day, a day to raise awareness for the Americans who are currently held overseas and those who were formerly held captive. This is the third annual observance on the federal level and New Jersey's first year recognizing the day. Robert Levinson, a former FBI agent, disappeared in Iran in 2007 and is considered the longest-held American hostage in history. Robert's daughter, Sarah Levinson Moriarty, is an #NJ07 constituent and has channeled unimaginable grief into a relentless pursuit of justice and advocacy, not only for her father, but for every American family living the nightmare of wrongful detention abroad. I have worked closely with Sarah to advance legislation to protect Americans overseas. This Congress, I co-led the bipartisan Countering Wrongful Detention Act, which was signed into law last year. This legislation makes clear that there will be consequences for Iran and other hostile regimes that use innocent Americans as bargaining chips. Under @POTUS's leadership, Iran's days of evading consequences for its hostage-taking, terrorism, and destabilization are over. The United States will hold this regime accountable.

Statement from family of Bob Levinson: "For nearly 19 years, Iran has lied, obstructed, and refused to answer for the kidnapping, detention, and death of our father, Robert Levinson. He was taken by Iranian officials in 2007, held for years without basic human rights, denied contact with his family, and never returned home. Ayatollah Ali Khamenei led the regime responsible for these crimes. His death does not erase what Iran did to our father, and it does not end our fight for accountability. But it is a significant moment for our family and for every family that has suffered at the hands of this regime’s hostage-taking and wrongful detention. We are grateful to President Trump and Secretary Rubio for using the power of the United States to confront Iran and to hold it accountable, including by recognizing and addressing Iran’s long-standing practice of wrongful detention. At the same time, our hearts are with the Iranian people as they continue their struggle for freedom, dignity, and a future free from the repression of this regime. Now Iran must do what it has refused to do for nearly two decades: provide full accountability for what happened to our father, return his remains to our family, and disclose the truth about his kidnapping, imprisonment, and death. Our family will not stop demanding the truth. And we will not stop demanding justice."

March 9 is the day that Robert “Bob” Levinson was kidnapped and taken hostage. Every March 9 we remember. Every March 9 we recommit to seeking justice and accountability to the fullest extent of the law for the domestic and international crime of taking Bob Levinson and all people hostage. Every March 9 we recommit to getting all current state hostages and hostages back home. On March 9 we fly the official U.S. Hostage and Detainee Flag: only the second ever official U.S. flag ever created, after the P.O.W./M.I.A. Flag. It is also flown on Flag Day, on Independence Day, when a hostage perishes abroad, but also when one comes home. Join us at the U.S. State Department for a flag ceremony and a panel on March 9. Justice for Bob Levinson. Justice for all Hostages. Bring them all home now. Deter countries and non-state actors from even thinking of taking a U.S. Citizen or a “LPR with significant U.S. ties” hostage again. Let’s keep building on the Robert Levinson Act, as last amended in the 2026 NDAA. We remember Bob Levinson on March 9: for him, his amazing family, and for every U.S. person held hostage and every U.S family whose loved ones are unjustly and wrongfully detained as hostages or state hostages. LETSBRINGTHEMHOMENOW!

This year's NDAA included the Countering Wrongful Detention Act, which I co-led with @RepFrenchHill. This legislation takes a major step forward in holding foreign governments accountable for the unlawful detention of American citizens.   My constituent, Sarah (Levinson) Moriarty, lost her father, Robert Levinson, after he was taken hostage by Iran in 2007. For years, her family endured the agony of not knowing where he was, whether he was alive, or if they would ever see him again. Rather than remain silent, Sarah has turned her grief into tireless advocacy, working to get this bill across the finish line and protect other American families from experiencing the same fear and heartbreak.   The Countering Wrongful Detention Act sends a clear message to foreign governments that there will be consequences for this kind of behavior, and the United States will go to great lengths to protect its citizens. I fought for this bill, and I am glad it has now been signed into law.
