In as much as I love the Nigerian Army and want it to succeed, I must point out some facts and address certain misleading claims. First, I spent 9 years in Borno State out of the 12 years I served in the Nigerian Army. The salary paid to soldiers (other ranks) is a joke and an insult compared to their sacrifices. Many soldiers cannot afford decent meals for their families. How do you explain to the general public that a Lieutenant who has spent just 6 months to 1 year in service after graduating from NDA earns more than a Master Warrant Officer (MWO) who has served for 32–34 years? We understand they are commissioned officers, but the gap is unreasonable especially since the Navy and Air Force do not have such a wide disparity like the Nigerian Army. Talking about uniform and boots allowance, the last time the Nigerian Army paid this was around 2015–2016 during General Buratai’s tenure, and since then, it has stopped. So the ex-soldier is 100% correct, and you know that. Furthermore, the Nigerian Army deliberately increased only the Ration Cash Allowance (RCA) from ₦30,000 to ₦90,000 because it goes directly into Army controlled channels (S&T accounts), unlike the operational allowance which goes directly to soldiers’ accounts still remains at ₦45,000 per month. The increase in feeding allowance appears deliberate because soldiers are compelled to eat Army provided food in the North East against their preference. Nigerian Army allows the Supply and Transport (S&T) unit to control and potentially mismanage the funds. So, they channeled the money back to big men account. The food provided by S&T is often of very poor quality, many would not even consider it suitable for animals, let alone human consumption. Numerous soldiers, both inside bush and town, have complained about this poor feeding but Nigerian Army keep debunking it because they're benefiting from the money. As a result, many soldiers avoid Army food altogether because it can lead to health issues. They end up spending their personal money to feed themselves. Regarding military kits such as fragmentation jackets and helmets, when you arrive at the theatre of operations, your unit is expected to request these items from Theatre Command. However, only the officers own are been approved leaving the soldiers to source it by themselves. I was never officially issued a jacket or helmet for the 9 years i spend in Borno state, i only managed to get one from soldiers who were leaving the operation. So, the ex-soldier was not entirely wrong.
