She was the first victim to go on camera. She was undergoing treatment for advanced bowel cancer at the time. She did it anyway. @BBCNewsnight producer Meirion Jones (@MeirionTweets) and journalist Liz MacKean had built the investigation. BBC management spiked it. Instead of broadcasting the story, the BBC aired Christmas tributes to Savile. The man the corporation had just learned was a serial child abuser got a warm festive send-off. The spiked interview footage was then handed to Panorama, which broadcast it in 2012 as Jimmy Savile: What the BBC Knew. Nobody asked Karin Ward. She never gave permission. The BBC had promised her Freddie Starr would not be identified in her interview. He was identified. Starr sued her. Not the @BBC. Not @ITV. Her. A private individual with bowel cancer, fighting a £300,000 defamation claim for words she said on someone else's programme, for a story she was pressured to give, about footage she never authorised. Both the BBC and ITV refused to provide financial support. The BBC eventually offered money three days before trial. Karin Ward's lawyers took the case on a no-win-no-fee basis. She fought it alone for two years. On 10 July 2015, Mr Justice Nicol ruled entirely in her favour. The judge found her account to be true. Freddie Starr was left with a costs bill estimated at around £1 million. Karin Ward said afterward: the BBC's handling of her case was a shameful indictment of how large corporations deal with vulnerable people. Meirion Jones put it more bluntly. He said the BBC behaviour would frighten whistleblowers away from going to the corporation. He suspected the abandonment was deliberate, in the hope the court would find Ward a liar, so the BBC could justify the original decision to suppress the story. A Foreign Fuck sexual predator who made a 14-year-old girl drunk on her birthday so that he could rape her has been jailed. Khayrul Islam, of Ropley Street, Tower Hamlets, was known to the victim’s family when he contacted the teenager on her birthday and invited her to his home to celebrate. The child went and was given alcohol until she was drunk, which is when Islam attacked her. She managed to run away, leaving behind some of her belongings, and she cried out that she had been raped. Members of the public came to help the girl and flagged down a passing police car. As the girl was shocked, she couldn’t remember the address she escaped from but Islam’s phone number was used to trace his address. The 29-year-old was arrested that same day on suspicion of rape. Detective Sergeant Michael Dixon, of the Met’s Central East Safeguarding Team covering Tower Hamlets, said: "Khayrul Islam is a dangerous sex offender who deliberately targeted a young vulnerable girl and lured her into a situation where he could sexually assault and rape her." Appearing at Snaresbrook Crown Court on Wednesday (June 5), Islam was sentenced to 10 years’ imprisonment for two counts of rape, two counts of sexual assault by penetration and one count of sexual assault by touching against a 14-year-old girl. He was also given a Sexual Harm Prevention Order with strict conditions that will allow the police to monitor him for 15 years. Islam had previously been convicted following trial at the same court on January 8.

Ryan Bungey, now known as Eden Winters, has been jailed after being convicted of raping and sexually assaulting two young girls in Cornwall. The 27-year-old, who has gender dysphoria, groomed and isolated one victim before subjecting her to repeated rapes over eight months, including brutal attacks in a children’s treehouse while other kids played nearby. He also sexually abused her with a Playstation controller and forced her to watch extreme pornography to normalise the abuse. Bungey threatened suicide in front of the girl’s family if she tried to leave him, encouraged her to stop eating, self-harm and even kill herself. He raped the second victim in her own family home after persuading her parents to let him stay, claiming he was homeless, while her mum and dad slept upstairs. The judge described it as controlling, humiliating and degrading abuse that exploited the girls’ youth and vulnerability. One victim said the abuse made her try to kill herself. The other said she is disgusted by him and is now focusing on healing. Bungey was found guilty of five counts of rape and two counts of sexual assault at Truro Crown Court and sentenced to 13 years in prison.

The Jay Report, published in 2014, found that approximately 1,400 children had been abused in Rotherham between 1997 and 2013. It concluded that by 2005 it was hard to believe senior officers and elected members were not aware of the problem. Zero senior officials were prosecuted. Zero. A researcher identified the abuse network in 2001 with names, car plates, and victim counts. The institution's response was to bury the paperwork and threaten the person who wrote it. HE PROTECTED 54,000 DOCTORS. THE @NHS PROTECTED ITSELF. In January 2014, Dr Chris Day (@drcmday) was working overnight in the intensive care unit at Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Woolwich. Two locum doctors didn't show up. The unit was running at double the patient load the national guidelines allow. He raised the alarm. He reported unsafe staffing. He linked the situation to two patient deaths. That's what the NHS calls a whistleblower. What followed was eight years of litigation, a legal battle all the way to the Court of Appeal, and over £700,000 of public money spent by Health Education England (@NHSE_WTE) and Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust (@LG_NHS) trying to stop his case being heard at all. Here's the really elegant bit. HEE's opening legal argument wasn't that they'd done nothing wrong. It was that whistleblowing law simply didn't apply to them, because they didn't directly employ junior doctors. They were just the organisation that controlled the career progression of every single one of England's 54,000 junior doctors. Totally different thing. Dr Day fought that argument to the Court of Appeal and won. The law was clarified. All 54,000 junior doctors below consultant grade in England now have statutory whistleblowing protection. One man, crowdfunding against three QCs, changed employment law for an entire profession. No formal apology from the NHS. No reinstatement. No path back to a consultant career. He has worked as a locum A&E doctor ever since, doing overnight shifts while his opponents collected salaries, pensions, and the occasional glowing tribute to NHS transparency. During the 2022 tribunal hearing, the communications director at Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust deleted up to 90,000 emails. The director whose entire NHS email archive was also deleted during live litigation happened to be the instructing legal client in the case. The tribunal described the conduct as extraordinary. Nobody was prosecuted. The trust issued a partial apology about a press release. The system did exactly what it always does. It absorbed the cost, deflected accountability, and waited for the man it destroyed to run out of money or energy. He hasn't.
