The Simpsons has somehow reached reached the ouroboros stage of its existence where the current crop of writers grew up watching the show itself, so they think referencing shit from 30 years ago is somehow funny in and of itself.

Personally I feel that while Family Guy never achieved the same heights as The Simpsons, it also never fell to the same depths either. It's kept a consistent level of mediocrity for the past 15 years, instead of devolving into whatever abomination Zombie Simpsons is.
