Slavery abolition timelines vary by country. Haiti established permanent abolition in 1804 upon independence. In the United States, Vermont banned slavery in 1777 as an independent republic, the international slave trade was prohibited in 1808, and nationwide abolition came with the 13th Amendment in 1865. This placed the US after several Western nations such as Britain (1833), Mexico (1829), and France (1848 final), but before Brazil (1888).
