The Million-Dollar Lesson 💰 In October 1988, John Barrier—a self-made millionaire in Spokane, WA, who had banked with Old National Bank (now part of U.S. Bank) for over 30 years,—cashed a $100 check there while dressed in his usual work clothes (shabby, from his building refurbishment business). He had parked in the bank’s lot, which charged 60 cents (often rounded to 50 cents in retellings), and the attendant directed him inside for validation. The teller refused, saying validation was only for “real” transactions and that cashing a check didn’t count. Barrier asked for a manager, who also turned him down with a dismissive look. Insulted, he withdrew his entire balance—about $1 million—and walked it across the street to Seafirst Bank (now Bank of America).
