Friends, the only alternative to Christ is chaos. That’s what we’re seeing all around us, and if we’re honest, it’s what we’re seeing far too often in our own hearts. The good news is there’s still time to repent. facebook.com/JayH.Hobbs/pos…

I’ve been thinking this week about Brian Tingley: a Christian counselor who challenged Washington state’s viewpoint-based counseling ban in 2021. At the time, challenging a counseling ban felt like a cultural “third rail”—especially for a blue state counselor with a reputation to uphold. But Brian knew the harm that would come to families if these bans were upheld. So he sued. Tingley lost at the district court, then at the 9th Circuit. When @ADFLegal appealed to the Supreme Court, three justices favored taking Brian’s case—just one vote shy of a cert grant. Justices Thomas and Alito wrote dissents from the cert denial, noting the importance of the issue—and the fact that it wasn’t going away. They were right. Two years later, we appealed a near-identical case from Colorado: Chiles v. Salazar. This time, the Supreme Court took the case. And just this week, the Court referenced Tingley in its Chiles opinion, ruling 8-1 that Colorado’s counseling ban was an “egregious assault” on First Amendment principles. “The Constitution does not protect the right of some to speak freely; it protects the right of all.” Sometimes—oftentimes—you have to lose before you can win. And no one can predict when the win will come. It’s a matter of simply stepping out in boldness and faith to do what’s right, come what may. I’m deeply grateful to every ADF client who makes that choice—whether they walk the path of Brian Tingley or Kaley Chiles. Win or lose, they stand up. They set their comfort aside. They challenge injustice. It’s people like this who will keep America free.

I'm going to keep posting this Alstair Begg clip "The Man on the Middle Cross" (less than four minutes in length) every Holy Week, because its message is true in 2026, it will be true in 2036 and it will be true in 3036. "If i take my eyes off the cross, I can then give only lip service to its efficacy while at the same time living as if my salvation depends upon me. And as soon as you go there it will lead you either to abject despair or a horrible kind of arrogance. And it is only the cross of Christ that deals both with the dreadful depths of despair and the pretentious arrogance of the pride of man that says you know, I can figure this out."

The criminal conviction of Christian politician Päivi Räsänen for "hate speech" in Finland's Supreme Court, for a church pamphlet she wrote decades ago, undeniably shows the extent of the free speech crisis in Europe. "When US Vice President JD Vance told last year’s Munich Security Conference that he feared free speech was in retreat in Europe, much of the media and political class reacted with shock and horror. 'If I understood him correctly, he is comparing conditions in parts of Europe with those in authoritarian regimes,' commented German defence minister Boris Pistorius. 'That is unacceptable, and it is not the Europe and not the democracy in which I live and am currently campaigning.' Mr Pistorius added that 'in our democracy, every opinion has a voice'. Well, I wonder what he would say about today’s Supreme Court ruling in Finland, in which Christian parliamentarian Päivi Räsänen was criminally convicted on “hate speech” charges for a pamphlet she wrote for her church in 2004." @Paul_B_Coleman in @Daily_Express ✍️

In his book Deep Work, Cal Newport talks about the concept of an “any benefit” mentality. What is that? Newport explains the underlying presupposition: “You’re justified in using a network tool if you can identify any possible benefit to its use, or anything you might possibly miss out on if you don’t use it.” I see this mentality everywhere. Let me give you my favorite example: the news. I think the news is mostly a waste of time. Why? Postman captures my thinking, “[M]ost of our daily news is inert, consisting of information that gives us something to talk about but cannot lead to any meaningful action.” A news alert flashes across the screen: “Huge Earthquake in China.” So what? What does that have to do with me? I live in Ohio. I don’t have any direct connections to China. I’m not a global aid worker. This information is irrelevant to my life. Now, this is the point where a Christian will argue, “But but now you know how to pray for them.” Okay, I suppose that is a slight benefit. But let’s consider that in the light of opportunity cost. Opportunity cost is an economic principle which can be applied to any investment. It describes the loss of potential gain from other alternatives when one alternative is chosen. Here we are talking about how you spend or invest your time. You chose to spend an hour or, perhaps even, hours on news for the gain of seconds or minutes of prayer for folks in China. That’s the cited benefit. But what better opportunities did you lose out on? Where else could have you spent that time to get better benefits? The question isn’t if there is “any benefit.” You can cite a small benefit from most activities. The question is what is the good, the better, and the best use of your time. That takes discernment. Newport recommends you take what he calls the craftsman approach: “Identify the core factors that determine success and happiness in your professional and personal life. Adopt a tool only if its positive impacts on these factors substantially outweigh its negative impact.” This has become my guiding principle. I only add “faithfulness to God” ahead of success and happiness. As my responsibilities have increased, I’ve gotten brutal in my application of this principle. If the benefit from an activity/investment doesn’t offset the opportunity cost, I kill it. At least, that is what I'm pushing for. Time and attention are our most precious resources. Choosing where to invest them is the key to a productive and, often, a happy life. Commenting on Ephesians 5:16, Matthew Henry writes: "It is a great part of Christian wisdom to redeem the time. Good Christians must be good husbands of their time, and take care to improve it to the best of purposes, by watching against temptations, by doing good while it is in the power of their hands, and by filling it up with proper employment, one special preservative from sin. They should make the best use they can of the present seasons of grace. Our time is a talent given us by God for some good end, and it is misspent and lost when it is not employed according to his design. If we have lost our time heretofore, we must endeavour to redeem it by doubling our diligence in doing our duty for the future." This is our task. Let's get to it!

This story is now more than 25 years old and I have told it more times than I can count, but it hits very differently today. I was anchoring SportsCenter one afternoon and Lou Holtz was on the show. I was quite excited to talk with him, he had been an icon all of my life. He was very friendly, asking me all about myself as we walked toward the studio to record an interview. I told him: “Actually, Coach, it’s quite exciting, my wife and I are expecting our first child in the next few weeks.” He stopped dead in his tracks and put a finger up near my face. And I’ll never forget what he said. “Young man, the most important thing you can do for a child is make sure every day they know how much you love their mother.” And, just like that, he started walking again. Our daughter was born a month later, our son came two years after that. And I have thought about what Lou Holtz said to me that day about a million times since. RIP Coach, thanks for the best advice anyone ever gave me.

Up until about 5 minutes ago, we all knew what a woman was. That's why there is a Women's History Month. @xx_xyathletics & @ADFLegal made this video asking why the ACLU legal team can't define "woman" now for the purpose of protecting women's rights.

X v. EU Commission isn’t just about X. It's about you. It’s about who controls what you’re allowed to say online. If unelected bureaucrats can punish platforms for lawful speech, your free speech isn’t safe. This case will shape the future of free expression in the digital age.

I mean, technically the EU declared war on X through the DSA. Musk had a choice: pay crippling costs in ever-changing regulatory "compliance" or crippling fines for "non-compliance". Faced with this choice, he has no choice but to fight!
