It was great to get together with learners from our secondary schools and hear how they would like to influence their schools and communities as part of Midlothian's Learners Conference! Fantastic key note from our new Children's Commissioner, what a fab day! @CYPCS @mideduteam

Delighted to be with 80 young people from Midlothian today who shared great examples of where they were enjoying their rights and where they had concerns. Wonderful to see @mideduteam nurturing these young human rights defenders. @CYPCS

This data comes from our 2025 STFP Probationer Survey, which had responses from over 350 probationers across all many Scottish councils. While we acknowledge this isn’t the full cohort of ~3,000, it represents over 10%—a strong voluntary response rate for this kind of sector-specific feedback. We’re transparent about our methodology and welcome constructive engagement. The full report and breakdown are available on our website if you’d like to explore the data in more detail.

@Teachers4Perm What survey did this data come from? There's close to 3000 probationers in Scotland and this survey looks like it's only accounting for around 300 probationers?

Over 160 probationer teachers rated their council support just 1 out of 5 ❌ Councils like Edinburgh, Glasgow, and Dundee are at the bottom of the rankings for support during the probation year. These are the same councils expected to: •Tackle the teacher shortage 👩‍🏫 •Deliver ASN provision 🧩 •Reduce class sizes 🏫 How can they do that when new teachers feel this unsupported? This isn’t just about satisfaction — it’s about retention, workload, and the future of Scottish education ⚠️ Time for proper planning, accountability, and action.

Adaptive teaching = high quality teaching Often good teachers don’t realise what they are actually doing to adapt to learners’ needs; it’s done on autopilot. Breaking down the granular detail of practice&being able to verbalise WHY it works for each learner is so valuable.

Thanks for having me @NewbattleCHSHT I learned so much from my discussions with your students. The diversity of pathways was so impressive - everyone spoke so confidently about the purpose of their learning, how the school supports them - and their aspirations for the future.
Gib McMillan@NewbattleCHSHT

Thank you very much to @GGillHHam1 for the time spent in our school. Our students spoke brilliantly about their learner pathways and how the wider SCQF helps them. #proudHT #AIMHIGHER

Tweeps: Daughter is studying in Scotland next semester. I need xmas book ideas for her- ideally something a bit like Kate Fox’s “Watching the English”- funny but useful guide to culture & norms of daily life. If not that then just really funny. Thoughts?

We loved seeing so many of our Midlothian NQTs today at our session on Reading Comprehension. Thanks to those who volunteered to wear our 'summarising sombreros' to demonstrate summarising the story of Little Red. 🐺

Delighted that our very own Miss Forbes was quoted in @afPE_PE sharing how children's rights are at the core of PE lessons in @LasswadeHSC: "A respectful PE lesson... involves positive relationships, highly differentiated practice and student voice & autonomy" Well said! @midgov
