Getting off an international flight at Dulles has got to be one of the most miserable travel experiences possible. Takes forever to deplane, customs is always a mess, and then there’s the people movers, the most stupid fucking idiotic design choice ever made at a major airport.

Starting this summer, nearly 2,000 sensors will be embedded throughout CLT’s future Runway 1C/19C, laying the foundation for what will become the only modern, instrumented “smart runway” of its kind in the U.S. when commissioned in 2027.
These sensors will track pavement conditions in real time, helping CLT make smarter maintenance, safety and operational decisions before problems happen while extending the life of one of the Airport’s most valuable assets.
In partnership with University of North Carolina at Charlotte and its Aviation and Innovation Research Institute, Charlotte AIR, the project also gives students hands-on experience while helping shape future FAA standards for airports across the country.
