Inevitably, as human populations expand biodiversity declines. This process has gone on for far too long. Time to stabilise our population and work with that scenario.

@TMFScottP Correct. Skills shortages was the justification used by business 20 years ago when the Howard Government doubled the migration program. The migration program hasn’t solved anything, the shortages remain. We should train our own.

There goes the '... but we need more tradies' excuse for population growth exceeding the growth in housing supply. What does that leave us with? (And what are national and state governments doing to address local skills shortages? More TAFE funding needed) #ausbiz #auspol

This is a heartbreaking day for so many across the country who care for nature, and especially for the local people and Traditional Owners who have fought so hard to protect this amazing place, and its wildlife much of which will now die. So much for ‘nature positive’.
Dr Kirsty Howey@kirsty_howey

The bulldozers destroying habitat for endangered Gouldian Finches, black-footed tree rats and over 270 bird species at Binybara/Lee Point. This is a place beloved by thousands of people across Darwin. Its loss is a failure of our environment laws, and deeply upsetting.

@billshortenmp Les was an authentic voice championing the less well off and marginalised, who always dealt in facts. There are very few like him, and he will be greatly missed.

Vale Les Twentyman, one of Melbourne’s big characters. We were in contact just this week and he worked right up til the last. Thoughts and prayers to his family, friends, colleagues and all the people he helped along his road less travelled.

"... while the intelligent set about reorganising at sustainable scale."😂 polies excluded.
Martin Tye@martinrev21

If #populations were actually to decline, all our politicians/neo-liberal economists could do is to run around like headless chooks saying: "Oh, the GDP figure! Oh economic growth! ... while the intelligent set about reorganising at sustainable scale. #overpopulation

@TheKouk Good point Stephen. What will happen is that Melbourne will have lost all the advantages we got through the vision of our Garden City forefathers, have lost our tree canopy cover and open space, and we will become a hot, congested, nasty place to live.

What happens when all the heritage listed areas are bulldozed and replaced with apartments? That is, all 'available' land is built upon as the YIMBYs want? Some would argue we are very near this point in most big cities in Australia.

I'm never sure how activist governments should be when it comes to industry policy. But I'm *bloody* sure we should have: a) Collected (much) more in resource rents; b) Used those rents to seed a Sovereign Wealth Fund; and c) Better protected agricultural land #auspol #ausbiz
Rex Patrick@MrRexPatrick

As @MadeleineMHKing lectures that our nation’s wealth comes from resources and mining, she should reflect on how successive Govts 1) failed to collect proper royalties and 2) created the dependency by not supporting our manufacturing sector and dumbing down our economy. #auspol

@RNBreakfast @UDIANational Typical property developer greed. Golf courses in built up areas are important tree canopy cover, cooling our warming cities, protecting us from the heat island effect, and acting as wildlife corridors. They benefit many people who have never picked up a golf club.

Could unlocking prime green real estate used by a privileged few be the solution to housing shortages? Some private property developers and industry super funds say re-zoning under-utilised suburban golf courses could be the answer. @UDIANational abc.net.au/radionational/…

This is an important report all Australians should read on the #HousingCrisis. Despite record building we have a crisis? The problem lies in the demand, not supply side- our unprecedented #population growth serving a narrow set of vested interests.
Michael Bayliss@Miketbay83

A new report which actually explores the demand side contribution to the #HousingCrisis Proud to have cowritten this with @OSullivan_Jane, comissioned by @SustPopAus population.org.au/briefing-notes…

Why don't Australian economists adjust GDP figures for #population to give a p/capita figure? Because that would expose the fact that on a p/person basis we have had multiple recessions over the last 25 years, ... & that our "growth" requires ever increasing infusions of people.
