For @WKM_Up I reviewed Love and New Notes which I didn’t like a lot. I also went a bit into the phenomenon of the “Nollywood wicked woman” and how the film accidentally engages with it. whatkeptmeup.com/nigerian-movie…

“Listening to A-Q’s GE 3 helped me resolve that A-Q is my favourite Nigerian rapper, period. He continues to minister to me in ways that his peers don’t (side-eye Vector and Big Bird). Perhaps it is our similar backgrounds (Lagos mainland boy, public school education, family-oriented), but A-Q is not afraid to be vulnerable, temperamental and politically incorrect in the service of his conviction and craft.” open.substack.com/pub/damiajayi/…

When rape survivors speak in Nigeria, the first response is rarely protection, it is interrogation. Rape apologism thrives on distraction. Question her story. Question her timing. Anything but question the perpetrator. ✍🏾: @aanu_id 🔗: the49thstreet.com/rape-apologism…

Nigerians have energy to kill poor gay people. Tie them and throw them from a three story building, then celebrate and mock them at their funeral. But zero energy for the people killing them daily, the people making sure they remain poor, in darkness, with no hospitals, dangerous roads, sub-par education. Zero humanity. This is not even the government. This is fellow citizens murdering and celebrating the death of a young man just because he was gay. What a sad, sad way to live. What a wasteland.
Red Media@RedMedia_us

Nigeria, a country battling with poverty, bad roads, and unstable electricity, is celebrating a young man they killed for being gay. Hilary Ikechukwu, a promising 23-year-old fresh graduate, was reportedly tied on both hands and thrown from a three-storey building by a group of homophobes. Even during his funeral, these people gathered outside his family's home dancing and shouting homophobic slurs as you can see in this video. Stories like this are why Pride exists — to remind people that every life deserves dignity and safety. Rest in peace, Hilary 🕊️

Sundance 2026: Praise Odigie’s ‘Birdie’ Review (Short Film). Praise Odigie Paige creates gorgeous imagery in Birdie, but the film’s narrative struggles to give its story the same weight as its visuals. Read more in our Sundance review. whatkeptmeup.com/nigerian-movie…
