Yesterday evening, I had the honor of sharing my story. 17 years ago, I was the patient entering treatment for alcoholism. Today, I serve as a Senior Advisor at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, working alongside Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and Senior Advisor Kathryn Burgum to advance President Trump’s Great American Recovery Initiative. For far too long, addiction has been treated as a moral failing instead of what science has shown it to be… a chronic, treatable brain disease. Recovery is possible because people believed in me before I believed in myself. Today, I celebrate more than 17 years of sobriety, while also remembering the family members I’ve lost to addiction and fentanyl poisoning. This mission isn’t just policy to me… it’s deeply personal. My prayer is that more people find the courage to ask for help, more families experience the hope of recovery, and fewer families experience the heartbreak of addiction. Recovery is real. Sorry, buddy. No honey. No picnic baskets. No Airbnb. 😂 Nothing gets your morning started quite like reviewing your camera footage and realizing a bear was literally looking through your front door while you were dreaming. I was honored to speak on Saturday at the United Against Fentanyl Walk in Grand Junction, representing the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). I am especially proud of Tenelle Wolff, who turned the unimaginable loss of her son to fentanyl poisoning into a mission to bring hope, awareness, and action to our community. Her courage and determination are inspiring, and this event is a testament to the difference one person can make. A special thank you to Mark McCallister for helping bring this important event together. It was encouraging to see families, advocates, first responders, community leaders, and people in recovery standing united with one purpose—to prevent future tragedies and remind others that recovery is possible.
