This is absurd, and I can’t begin to imagine how upsetting. How can there be an equitable and fair system for very unwell children if there is a lack of transparency regarding the criteria for prioritisation and selection for treatment/surgery? This just reeks.

@CHI_Ireland has failed to meet its own surgical activity targets over consecutive years. •2024 target: 551 → actual 513 •2025 target: 540 → actual 534 Surgical activity is already falling, with February 2026 approximately 22% lower than February 2025. International outsourcing targets were set at just 11 cases for 2025 across centres like Great Ormond Street Hospital and Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital. That is not a scaled response. It will not reduce waiting lists. Most outsourcing activity is delivered through the private Blackrock Clinic using CHI surgeons, typically for less complex cases. If the same workforce is being redeployed and complex children are not included, this is not capacity expansion. It is containment. Output is down. Targets are missed. International access is minimal. CHI has indicated that elective surgeries will be paused during the move to the new children’s hospital, further reducing capacity. On tonight's episode of...Failures in the CHI Patient Feedback Services and Incident Management Framework process when it comes to investigating the entirety of a patient/parents complaints.... how CHI don't recognise the Categorisation of Serious Incidents in accordance with the HSE incident Management Framework Policy of 2020. When we received the Terms of Reference for our complaint into our child's care (Patient X) we noticed that there was no Categorisation assigned. As part of my rebuttal to the ToR I highlighted this. All complaints get a Categorisation. This is determined from a HSE risk Assessment table whereby certain criteria lead to Extreme, Major, Moderate and Minor effects. We outlined how our child's experienced failings met the standard for a Category 1 review. This would mean that there had to be an independent investigation. The interim CEO of CHI in 2024 held the position of the Chairperson of the Serious Incident Review Group (SiRG) which is now called the Incident Management Team (IMT). She denied (in writing..posted underneath) that the effects which our daughter experienced by failures in care and services in CHI met the Cat 1 criteria. So...basically...yeah..there is a HSE protocol for determining the Categorisation. BUT...if it means they can't investigate 'in house'...then they will not adhere to that table. And the fact that the CEO states that she agrees with the SiRG team....well then...sure thats gospel isnt it?!? 🙄 What i have found out since? Parents of a child who passed away were also given a Category 2 review. Talk about disrespect. As you can read...I am a nightmare for policies, adherence and asking for accountability. The funds are there. This is about access and control. @CarrollJennifer if she actually listened to parents would sanction funds be given to children to enable them to access care in an approved centre of their/parents choice. That would actually work. Parents would have autonomy to make timely decisions regarding their children’s care. Instead we have the incompetence of CHI holding the purse strings while children deteriorate on lists and in some cases die. 4th month of the year … bet not 1 child has had access to surgery abroad this year. That is incompetence and scandalous if so. Barcelona option has no SLA in place of yet. 4th month 🤯 Refusing parents funds for their children to go abroad for surgery when they have nothing to offer is horrendous.

We agree. Safe care must come first. But safety cannot be spoken about in the future tense while children are at risk today. Many are still being treated in outdated infrastructure that does not meet modern infection prevention standards, including shared bathrooms and ward layouts that increase risk. Core safety systems remain absent: • no fully implemented electronic health record • no spinal registry for device traceability These are not optional upgrades tied to a new building. They are baseline patient safety requirements. We cannot say “safety first” while deferring it to the opening of a hospital. Safety does not begin with a ribbon cutting. Children are at risk now.
